Thinking of taking up Jiu Jitsu in the Baton Rouge area. Looks like there are a couple of highly rated gyms around town but the most convenient for me would be JM Modern Jiu Jitsu. Anybody have any experience with them? Or any gym in general? Never done a martial art before so I'll be completely green to all of it.

SIAP I searched and didn't find anything

I train in BJJ in Houston but travel all over LA and TX and usually take my gi to roll. The only place in BR I have rolled at is at the UFC gym over on Perkins and Acadian. They have some legit instructors and a good school.

Good luck with starting out. Don't get overwhlemed. Jits is a marathon, not a sprint. The main thing in BJJ is finding a good school with a good atmosphere you fit into because your instructors/training partners will become almost as close as family.

BJJ is fun. I dabbled in it during college and it was fun. I didn't have a lot of time for it and it was informal classes at the rec center. It was just a free thing the student wanted to do. Got a few moves down but could muscle my way through most of the other students so I was not able to really practice my technique because of this. I know any legit person could beat me really easily.

I also trained there at Crazy Tim's school too, but that is nuts to make that drive from BR to Laffy just to roll. The main thing with BJJ is mat time and you want a school that is close to the house so you can't use a drive as an excuse not to train.

Judo is a nice compliment to BJJ but I honestly only dabbled in it. I got into wrestling with my game and even more so when my son wrestled for his high school team since we train together. Wrestling really transitions into BJJ well and I would look for a school to have that in the class program, personally.

Sambo is alot like BJJ where it incorporates a lot of ground submissions, but some Sambo moves are so severe that they are not allowed in training and for sure not in sport BJJ. It's kinda like a BJJ on steroids. It's an awesome martial art for self-defense.

Wrestling is great
I'm just learning judo and do like what I have learned so far. I believe the sensei I learn from is at least a 5th degree but may be higher since he said only wears his red and white belt for ceremonies.

He also has an incredible ground game for a 50 year old man. He told me he went to a kron Gracie seminar and kron made everyone tap with 2 minutes. Then kron took a short break and was ready to roll and teach for another 3 hours

I am good friends with John Blunchi up in West Monroe. He is the only Kron Gracie affiliate in the US. Just curious if your teacher went up there for a seminar since Kron does them at John's school from time to time. I also concur about Kron. He is an animal. Maybe the best BJJ guy I know outside of maybe his dad, Rickson, although John's son, JB is damn close. He is like a Kron protege.

To kind of piggy-back off this, anyone know of a good place for boxing lessons in BR?
