Recently was diagnosed with Gout in my ankle and it is not fun.

Changing my diet to cut out some of the red meat and beer I drink now and when I can I'll start walking/running again.

Anything else that I should do? because when it hits I can't walk at all and I'm in considerable pain.

Yes. Yes, it sucks. Beef Isn't as bad as you think turkey and venison are some of the worst. Obviously beer is high in purines. Get some milk thistle and a good probiotic. Black cherry extract and celery seed extract are great ways to keep your purines AK the turn into uric acid flush out of your body. It's tricky to control that did it for about 6 or 7 years for me finally I gave in and got on Allopurinol and it helped tremendously. Do not take black cherry or celery seed during a flare-up. If you have a flare up get off of that stuff right away. Head to Urgent Care get a steroid shot in your arse and a prescription of colchicine and hang around the toilet for 24 hours. Good luck.

I should add u will get dehydrated taking celery seed and black cherry it will keep u flushed out pretty good if you work out be careful stay extremely hydrated lots of water even pickles. I popped a muscle in my forearm doing freaking shrugs cuz I was so dehydrated.

Man I hate to tell you this but you got it and you're stuck. I fought it my own for about 6 or 7 years. Finally couldn't take it anymore and got on Allopurinol. The steroid shot and colchicine will knock it out fast. However it can linger or come back. The only true way to treat it is with Allopurinol or uloric. But you still could have flare-ups. It sucks is definitely genetic. If you're a little heavy lose weight that helps.

I've had 3 flare ups since October, first two I just managed with a muscle relaxer and motrin. This last one my ankle became swollen so I went to the after hours clinic where they said gout.
I mean I exercise in that I walk/run 10-15 miles a week and while I'm a little heavy it has never been a hindrance since I do flag football, softball, and go walk/run or trial hike.

Go get ur levels tested by ur primary care physician during and after a flare up. I have chronic gout. My uric acid levels stay high. Once u figure that out ask him about allopurinol.

Will do, thanks because it fricking sucks when I can't walk/put weight on my ankle because of this. Plus I'm in so much pain I can't leave my house.

Bro i know. Ive had to crawl to the toilet from bed bc my foot. Just weight of bed sheet would be excruciating. High levels of uric acid can cause permanent joint damage.

Found out I have gout through a misdiagnosed meniscus tear. Went in for the knee scope and had gout crystals in my knee. Knee was perfectly fine and the crystals made it look like a tear on the MRI. While it sucked to have a knee scope to find this out, they also determined that I had been misdiagnosed with plantar fasciitis most of my adult life. I wondered why it would always flare up during the spring when eating a bunch of crawfish and drinking beer at boils.

Went to a rheumatoid specialist that put me on allopurinol. Haven’t had any major issues since, without any change to my diet. I had my first bad flare up in years this October while I was marathon training after one of my long runs, 14 miles I think. Said it was probably due to dehydration and took a prednisone taper to knock it out. Wasn’t able to train for about two weeks.

My general physician now keeps an eye on it instead of the specialist, and he tests my uric acid levels every year for my physical.

Hope it gets better for you.

Yes. Had it for years.

Went carnivore six months ago. No attacks at all except on the rare occasions I cheated. but even then the flare-ups weren't nearly as bad as they were prior to that.

Yes, the conventional wisdom on gout being related to meat has been mostly upended also.

Some decent write ups:

Colchicine is a damn miracle drug if you can tolerate it. Just make sure it’s the cheap generic or get the blend with probenecid which is always cheaper.

The dose is 1-2 a day. But I can tolerate 7 a day. Every dose reduces the flare until it’s gone.

Here’s the not so tasteful truth to fix this:

Lot of good advice above by others & some of this helps. I prefer not using drugs. Sounds like you have done some research & know the triggers. That’s the beginning. Also, stress is a huge cause. So, now drink juiced celery as much as possible, hydrate with H2O & piss alot. Rinse & repeat.

Been there before. Figure the triggers so it doesn’t re-occur. Those who never had it in the ankle will never understand. It literally handicaps you.

You know, I had an attack once back in 2013 they said was gout in my foot. You know, I didn’t change one thing and I haven’t had a problem since?

I don’t know what the deal was.
