Should hole in ones count if not hit from the tips?

Was playing with some guy a few weeks ago that hit the pin on his par 3 tee shot. When the ball bounced off and didn't go in he made the comment, "would've been my 12th".

I know good golfers that have played for years and never have nailed a hole in one. This guy was prob a low 90s golfer but playing from the two ups. The only thing I could figure is you're going to hit some by default if you have a wedge in your hand on every par 3.

Thoughts on it being official if not played from the tips (where the course was designed to be played)?

Absolutely should count. But that guy is lying his arse off about having 12.

Not true. I play one up from the tips almost everytime I play. More often than not I am hitting a PW through LW, and I only have 1 hole in one and that was with a 9i when I was 13.

Look back at your game and how many times have you holed out from the fairway (>75 yards) with a full swing from any club? Per your thoughts it should be a handful of times. Definitely way more times than you have hole in ones. I have only holed out with a full swing from the fairway one time (that I can think of) and it was with a 7i.

Now I have lipped out a few times and hit the stick twice on Par 3's, but only one fell.

Now I would say I have probably come closer to more hole in ones than I have full swing hole outs from the fairway. Which I guess may give some credence to your thought, but that fact is it has only happened once.

ETA: but to answer your question,

No, that is why there are different tees. If Player A hits a 7i 185 yards and Player B hits his 3h 185 yards. Would it really be an equal chance for a hole in one if Player A and Player B play from the tips of a par 3 that is 185 yards? No, that is why the longer hitter or much lower handicapper (there really is a balance of the two that determine which tees to play from) plays from further back and the shorter hitter or higher handicapper plays from the closer tees.

Courses aren't designed to only be played from the tips. If you make the ball in the hole in one shot, it's a hole in one. Using your logic women would be essentially ineligible for holes in one

you sound like a dick. Golf is supposed to be fun. If a guy that isn't good enough to play from the tips makes a hole in one from one up, you should be exited for him not turn it in to a dick measuring contest.

What does it even mean to be "official"? You either hit it in in one shot or you didn't.

Not trying to be a dick, it just seems odd when a guy bragging about 12 hole in ones walks up three tees and pulls out a 60 degree wedge to hit his shot.

If you have a hole in one from one or two up, you can claim it. I'll be pumped up and proud of ya.

If I make one from one up, I'll be pissed at whoever talked me into playing from one up.

If a person hits from a marked regulation tee box and it goes in on the first shot, then yes that's a hole in one. I wish had that kind of game with a 60 degree.

What's your handicap PHP? Are you breaking 80 from the tips on a regular basis?

I think you guys are doubting too quickly. If he hits worm burner shots that roll on the green forever, he could possibly have that many. You also don't know how many rounds a year he plays. He might have played 150 rounds a year for the last 5 years. Too many unknown variables to just say impossible.

I enjoy playing from the tips because I'm long off the tee. My score really doesn't change much from the tips or the one ups....usually anywhere from high 70s to low 80s and all my extra strokes typically come around the green.

Sorry....maybe I'm just bitter because I've never holed out a par 3 and that old hacker was working on his 12th and talked about how awesome he was for 18 holes.

Now someone is thinking. Old men and women tend to have them a lot because their balls cover more green surface than stronger golfers who generate lots of spin.

Maybe, maybe not.

I've played with guys who were fantastic with their irons but couldn't sink a putt to save their lives.

When I was playing a lot of tournament golf holing shots from the fairway or the tee happened a few times a year. You know your yardage and get one on line good things can happen.

I'll bet most folks have no idea how far they hit an 8 (or any other club). 158 is a great yardage for me these days with one.

If it's 154 I'll tee it back from the markers to help my chances. Do you do things like that and you increase your odds.

And you make more birdies too.

I hate the guy who just missed #12, he has more than me.

This in my opinion is a no brainer. If he is a low-90s player like you say, he should be teeing from two up.

As long as it is someone's first shot, and from regulation tees, it's a hole-in-one.

Hole-in-ones do not necessarily coorelate with what someone shoots, to a degree. I know plenty of people who haven't ever broken 80 that have more HIO's than I do, and I'm at my highest handicap in a decade at 2. I've only made two hole in ones. Do I have better chances now? Absolutely. I hit a lot of them close, but it's all luck when it goes in.

Agreed!

I once played golf with a guy that had just started. Like the guy had taken a couple lessons and hd played one 9-hole round in the previous month. We are halfway through the back 9. We are on a decent little par 3, about 165 from the tees we are playing. Ole boy pulls out his driver and proceeds to hit a worm burner that may be carried 80 yards. His ball takes the curves of the hill and finds the green, then follows the curves of the green like a putt, and falls in the hole. Uglies shot I have ever seen with one of the best finishes I have ever witnessed.

TL;DR: guy plays his first 18 hole round, uses his driver to putt from the tee box, and proceeds to shame the two guys he was playing with that have been playing their whole lives.
