First Set of Clubs for Myself and My Wife
Posted on 9/11/17 at 4:25 pm

So my wife mentioned recently that she wanted us to take up golfing. We are both in our late 20s. From a guy who only plays Golden Tee and one recent experience at Top Golf in OKC, I need some help
Her birthday is coming up, and the thought crossed my mind to get her a set of clubs. Can anyone give me advice on club shopping for our first sets? I'm not a cheap arse when it comes to gear, but I also don't want to fork out an arm and a leg on the best set of clubs out there only to find out she/we do not enjoy it.
What kind of money should I expect to pay for a solid set of clubs? What brands, etc. should I be looking for? I'm sure we will need to go into the store to be fitted, but I want to make sure I know a little about what we need before letting them talk me into spending too much money.
I am greatly thankful for any advice or links to other applicable threads that you can provide.
Incase any OT'ers hang out here...for my appreciation, I will NOT post pics of wife

Two options...a cheap, new, off-brand set
or a gently used set from a top manufacturer
Your budget would be helpful

I'll take a stab at $300-400 per set, but ideally my budget would be whatever it takes to get us good quality clubs that we won't be disappointed with too quickly if we enjoy the sport.

Buy a TaylorMade 2017 M2 9.5* with a 65g Kuro Kage Stiff Shaft then sell it to me for $100 when you stop playing in 4 months.

It's a Taylormade... it'll be $129 brand new in about 3 weeks when the M2.1 comes out and is 17 yards longer than the M2.

I said $300-400 for the set, not just the driver

I've got a set I bought for my wife and they've been to the range 3 times. In the attic ever since. I'll sell them cheap.

Keep going to TG instead.

Not sure about ladies clubs, but Edwin Watts always has plenty of used men's sets in the store at good prices. Most are 2 to 3 model years old.

Thanks to the couple people with constructive advice.

I'm auctioning a set of Ping G10's (4 iron through gap wedge, black dot) on eBay. Auction ends tonight at 9:00 central and starting bid is $250 (+$17 shipping). They are in good condition. The Ping "G" line is perfect for people just starting out (they are more forgiving and help you get the ball in the air more than a player's iron). So if you want a name brand but don't want to pay for new name brand clubs, a used set from the Ping G line is a good place to look. I also have the G10 driver and 3 wood I could sell you ($60 and $45) if you want to match the irons.
Before you buy any set of Pings though, make sure you at least look at the color coding chart to get best fit (even better is to go to a Ping rep and get fitted in person).
The good thing about buying a name brand is that if you decide to sell them down the road, they hold their value much better than non-name brand.

Nice used set is the way to go.
Tell the wife golf is a men's sport.

Nitro Brand...pretty sure it came from Academy. Driver, 3 wood, 21* hybrid, 5-p, mallet putter and bag. $100 just so your wife can try it a few times and give it up like mine

Pro Select is the same club selection as the Nitro's at Academy. Like dude above said, $100 she will go a few times realize she hates it and never play again.
