I haven't PLAYED in probably 2 years. Only hit at TOp Golf and another traditional range a few times. I want to get back into it. Problem is knowing how badly I will suck. I was never good. Never even bothered to get an official handicap. I was that guy who could go below 90 easily when playing well. Never broke 85. Shot it twice and shot an 84 at Sharpstown but that course doesn't count. Lol

I am gonna be BAD for about 6-12 months and know it.

Any of you guys experience a long layoff like this. Life got in the way really. No injury or anything like that.

Find a local teaching pro

I've taken long layoffs before. Perfect opportunity to clear your bad habits and focus on building a solid swing

I was out of golf for a number of years - getting back in was a humbling experience.

Practice chipping and putting as often as you can - they will help save some strokes.

Get with a pro and work on a game plan for you swing.

Main thing is to get out there and have fun.

i dont know about anyone else, but my first round after a layoff (like after winter is over out here) is always my best round. The few rounds that follow get progressively worse. I start thinking too much.

Then after that it levels off.

I sat out for 12 years. Was shooting low 80's and into the 70's on rare occasions. Played about 6 rounds last three months. It wasn't pretty. Had trouble breaking 100 first few rounds. Shot 90 at Santa Maria last week.

Of course equipment has changed much more for me than you. The new drivers and clubs are so much better I can't blame equipment anymore.

Double post so I'll add

Putting is the harder than I remember. I was a good putter but never a good ball striker. Opposite now. I need to go spend an hour on a practice green.

OP if you listen to any other advice listen to this. Let's pretend you only 2 putt every green; that's 36 right there. Getting back into golf after a lay off, you will not be hitting a ton of GIRs. Be able to make your misses not kill you.
2) Club up and keep he ball in front of you.

3) Dont ever decelerate!!!

My plan is to go out and "pee-paw around". Meaning taking more club and smoothing it. But that can lead to deceleration for me and sometimes blocking it dead right.

I hit two good shots at top golf with my hybrid that I actually drew on purpose. All over after that. Lol

The heat too.

My first round I played a few months ago all I though about was just hit the ball. Keep it simple and don't expect too much. Have fun most of all.

I would go to the best pro in town with a trackman and start from there. Reboot the whole swing with all the relevant info and technology--'with no bad habits to break.

be patient. remember to feel the weight of the club and swing the clubhead through like a bucket of water on a string. let your body adapt to the path of the club and not the path of the club to your body.
