My brother and I play a lot of golf together and playing just for scoring has gotten stale. We typically have a pretty competitive match going but sometimes i'll win by 7, he'll win by 4, i'll win by 3 and so forth.

We have decided to start a 6 month "season" where everytime we play golf, the winner get's 10 points and the loser gets 5 points. After 6 months, whoever has the least amount of points has to pay for us to play at a TBD golf destination that the winner picks. It's got to be less than 5 hours driving distance from Atlanta but that's the only stipulation.

We're also incorporating 4 majors in the 4 months which will be worth 20 points to the winner and 10 to the loser. In addition, the 4 majors will be match play, stroke play, stableford play and skins.

We have a list of rules for this that we've compiled over the past month and our season starts September 1st!

I'm super excited to see how much fun we can have with this.

Why does the loser get points?

Yeah... mathematically, if there's just two of y'all, no reason for the loser to get points. Just have the winner get whatever the difference is you have listed there. 5 for regular rounds. 10 for majors.

Hopefully you live in Decatur so you can squeeze Kiawah in for the 5 hr limit. St Simons isn't a bad backup though.

Why not do a Stableford race to 1000 points?

Sounds cool but wouldn't the skins and match play majors be the same thing? Or were you planning to have carryovers in the skins match?

That's what's called a modified dfloff circuit.

Not sure if this is the correct board for that kind of stuff.

But anyway....

So, this 6 month season will run thru December, January and February? # of the crappiest months for golf, even in the south.

Sounds like fun, but depending on the number of rounds someone could be able to win the season by the second major. Also, giving points for losses with only two people seems pointless. I would suggest:

1) either add a 3rd person or ditch the "second place" points

2) setup a known game every weekend or two weeks. if the game is canceled due to weather so be it, but if one of the parties cancels the game the other party gets half the winning points. That will help keep someone from getting out to a strong lead then making excuse on why they can't play this week.

3) do points awarded based on Nassau. Winner of front 9 gets 5 points, winner of back 9 gets 5 points, and the winner of the match gets 5 points. Then prorate quadruple it for your "major" games. Brother A wins by 2 strokes on the front (5pts), Brother B wins by 3 strokes on the back (5pts), So final points awarded would be Brother A 5pts, Brother B 10pts. Hell you could even make it a 6 hole split instead of 9 holes, then in theory you could have both players finish with 10pts each and a tie.

I think these suggestions, especially #3, would make this a really fun season and hopefully make it competitive all the way to the end.

Playing golf regularly with anyone is one of golf's greatest pleasure.

Playing with your brother is even better!

i agree with having a regular game with someone. But my brother is kind of a dick. And he has never played golf before so frick that

I like the race to 1000 stableford points idea. I might try to start that with a few people

I forgot I posted this! I wish TD would give notifications.

The reason for the loser getting points is if we play with other friends, the competition still exists. Meaning, if we have a 4-some and Friend A gets 1st place, I get 2nd place and my brother finished 4th place, then I still get 5 points.

I don't see why getting 5 points is any different than 0 points. We may change it after the 1st season if there's any advantage to it.

TBH, we never even thought of this. It seems fun, but going round by round is more competitive. For instance, when we played last weekend I was going into 18 with a 2 stroke advantage. Knowing that this hole was going to make or break 10 points vs 5 points made it that much more fun! If we were playing Stableford to 1000, then the only thing i'm playing for is points at that point. The feeling of going into 18 with a slight lead to win the match is something that I strive for.

Carryovers is going to be the difference. We will have carryovers in the skins vs no carryovers in the Match. Just something to mix it up.

Agreed but there is enough days that we could go out and play during the winter months.

I do like this idea. Thank you for the suggestion.
