IMO - Do not join anywhere until you purchase the house.

Use this time to test every club you’ll get a ton of free rounds too.

Golf course choices in the Woodlands are better than Katy.

What are you looking to spend. you can join clubs in Houston from $1,000 initiation all the way to over $100,000.

Braeburn is just about finished redoing the entire course. current initiation is $35kish, but that will be going up soon.

I wouldn't join anywhere until you're certain about where you're gonna live long term.

Lower initiation cost. Nothing fancy or too nice. Just want a decent course I can play with a decent social settings.

Katy area -

You have Pine Forest CC, Falcon Point CC and Willow Fork CC, but you also have some great public courses nearby like Blackhorse.

Pine Forest is a great course and place. Lots of good money games there in you are into that. If I lived in Katy that is where I would belong.

Woodlands area is loaded with Country clubs from the Woodlands CC, Bentwater, Carlton Woods and on and on.

One of the best kept secrets in the Willow Creek CC in Spring. The course is awesome and they have a really cool membership, lots of fun tournaments and events. I use to play a lot 5 years ago.

If you get stuck in between Katy and the Woodlands, the Champions and Northgate are great options.

Just left Northgate after almost 7 years, too many members and inconsistent conditions.

I didn't see if you mentioned your area, but personally, I need my club to be at the very most 20 minutes away. I found myself not playing, or especially practicing as much when I was a member at KCC which was usually a 30 minute drive, sometimes 20-25 from my house on a good day.

I'm doing a trial membership this summer at the club in my neighborhood and it's awesome being that close for after work practice/par 3 course, or even 4pm rounds that usually finish by 7 (and being back home by 7:05.)

All that to say in your situation I'd start with the closest options and branch out if those didn't meet my needs.

Eta
Just saw you were the one not settled yet. In that case, pick your neighborhood based on the club options, duh.

I shoot low 90’s but I’ve never been fitted for clubs nor had any lessons of any kind. My best man got me a fitting as a wedding gift I plan on using. I’m 6’2” so I think having slightly elongated clubs will help. I got a set of cobra bio cells when they came out around 2014 and looking to upgrade.

I didn’t play from May 2020 to May of this year and have played about 5 times since then. Surprisingly, my swing and shots have been the best they’ve ever been with the year off I’m definitely improving and want to keep improving.

ETA: I’d like to get to low to mid 80’s. My wife is a lawyer and I’m an engineer so I plan on playing golf in social and business settings in the future. I’ve got the itch for sure right now.
