Anyone ever gotten into it with an overzealous marshal?

I have never had an issue with marshals in my years of playing, but today I came across one who was just looking for something to bitch about. We got into it pretty good. It didn't help that it was the 17th hole of an already shitty round. at

My dad and a friend were playing a course near Destin several years ago and the Marshal pulled up behind us on the 3rd hole. It was odd because we were having to wait on every shot for the 4-some in front of us. We thought he would head up to them once he saw this but he stayed with us. It got to the point to him basically "instructing" us to be ready and telling us as soon as it was ok to hit our next shot. I asked him why he was sticking with us when it was obvious we were not holding anyone up and he claimed the 3-some behind us was waiting. We finally get thru nine and he asks us of the trailing 3-some can move up because they were with the group ahead of us and were members.
WTF? If he would have asked us at the 3rd hole, or hell even at #1 we would have easily swapped. F'ing ruined the front nine for that.

Details?
I was out this morning trying to get in an early round while out of town. Was playing like shite and already pretty frustrated.
There were a few holes that were cart path only on this course today. Well, I was on one of those holes, and the cart path runs along the left side. Of course, I pushed my drive up along the very right side of the hole. As I'm parking my car, I see a couple of course workers riding in a cart coming at me, so I pull over to where about half the cart is on a small gravel patch and half on the path so the workers didn't have to go through the mud. I went and played my shot, and I'm walking all the way back over to my cart, and I see this marshal pulling up behind me. I thought he was just going to ask me about my round, but he goes "Do you not understand what CART PATH ONLY means?" I told him that I pulled onto a gravel patch so the workers could get by without going into the mud. Literally no harm done. He goes on to lecture me that "college kids" don't think the rules apply to them and how we are always tearing up his golf course.
I told him to point to me where I damaged the course, and he couldn't do it. So I told him to go bother somebody else, and that just infuriated him. He told me that he could get me kicked off the course. I told him to go get the superintendent. I'll be done with my round before he makes it out here, and I'll explain to him how ridiculous you're being. So he just bitched some more and told me to not let him see it happen again, so I got in my cart and drove off to the 18th tee box, and as he passed I gave him a double bird and told him I hope he got t-boned driving home today. Yeah, trashy, I know, but I was fricking livid at this point, both at the marshal and my game. I triple-bogeyed 18...
He was an arse who was obviously pissed off at people my age for some unknown reason, and I was absolutely furious at my game and him making a scene out of nothing. Not a good combination. I understand him wanting to protect the course, but you really need to pick actual battles.

I bet only about 10% of that actually happened, if that much

Let the 3-some through, then hit into them every shot.

So in summary:
You pulled off the cart path, he asked you to not do that and then he drove off. You got mad and came here to make it sound like you were wronged and that's why you tripled 18.
Sound about right?

Hell, I wouldn't even worried about them playing thru. Wouldn't have bothered me at all.

Crotchety old men who think they run public courses are one of the biggest things keeping new players from taking up the game.
You were more polite than I would've been.
The only marshal I really had trouble le with was at Gulf Shores Golf Club. Many of you know who I am talking about. He likes to tell people the course plays 300 yards longer than the card.
One day it was raining, and the don't give rain checks if you choose to play in a rain day. We were on vacation with some friends and us men folk needed a get away. So we sat in the club house drinking beer with 3 old baws from Miss st. We were the only 6 people's the course.
On the first tee that old frick said something to us about playing the 1 ups and if we couldn't hit #2 in 2 shots he was going to make us move up. Well we all had either an 8 or a 9i into 2, we hit the green and told him to frick off.

The UC has had a few that should be shelved.
Retired authoritative 18 handicappers with a Judge Smails mentality.

If that guy has been there for about 15 years he can get fricked. When I was like 12 I was down there for a beach trip and my dad and uncle took my cousin and I out there to play. They called ahead to make sure juniors could play out there and explained that both of us were playing junior tour tournaments so we weren't going to be a problem with pace of play; and if we were we'd pick up and move on.
We show up and the guy in the pro shop and a marshal wage holy hell on my dad and uncle in front of us about bringing kids to their course. Apparently they made up a rule that you had to be 16 to ride (not drive) one of their carts. And they wouldn't let us walk either.
I don't remember the ultimate resolution but I know they spent the better part of 20 minutes telling my dad how we were going to be a burden on the course that day.

There was a time that the USGA was going to reject Bobby Jones' application to basically anything having to do with a tournament they were running.
Bobby had such a bad temper, as a younger man, that he would actually throw clubs in the middle of a competitive round with spectators nearby.
Then, it happened:
quote:
He was a gentleman but liked whiskey. He was obsessed with his sport to the point of putting it before wife and family. Until he got a good grip on himself, he was so ill-tempered that he hit a woman in the leg with a thrown golf club and would follow bad shots with a stream of obscenities.
At that point in time, Jones began to realize how his temperament would influence those around him, and how he would never let anyone see how badly he was playing by demonstrating his frustration publicly.
That's a good lesson learned.
