I like to think of this as the game that took everything we knew about video games, perfected it, then set the stage for the next 20-30 years. A once in the lifetime game that had the most impact on the industry.

That game is probably Super Mario 64.

If anything, I'd say Half-Life 1 had a bigger claim on that than it's sequel.

No. The average game developer isn't thinking about Half-Life 2. The design of that game hasn't influenced jackshit. They're thinking of Mario and Zelda. Even the head of Rockstar has admitted that any game developer that says that Mario and Zelda aren't the primary influences of their game design is simply lying.
