If anything, I'd say Half-Life 1 had a bigger claim on that than it's sequel.

Yea it does. HL1 set the stage really but HL2 is the best game ever made when it came out in terms of mechanics, level design, pace, story arc and making you feel in the moment.

I think some of you are confusing "greatest game of all time" with "my favorite game of all time."

There's a difference

I mean how do you really separate the 2 sometimes?

Hard to look past personal bias when based around preference of art.

Misspelled it, but seriously, name games that Half Life 2 has influenced? Now I'll list games that were influenced by Mario and Zelda. Pretty much all of them except for Tower Defense. There's not a game made in this day and age where Mario and/or Zelda weren't a huge influence on.

Your opinion is stupid to say the least.

But Mario and Zelda invented level design. Yes, HL2 is a great game, but it's no where in the ballpark as influential as these two franchises. Hell, Half Life probably wouldn't make the Top 20 of influential franchises.

Dude IDGAF about who changed the industry TBH.

Talking greatest game.

You will always been influenced by something.

HL1? I would think that game would make a Top 20, but again we aren't talking about influential. I'm speaking to greatest game, using totally different metrics to rate.

I'm ok with you calling it the greatest game, but Freaux was clearly talking about the most influential that only comes across once in a generation. You trying to put HL2 in that conversation is laughable at best. It has no place in that conversation whatsoever.

I think it is up for debate.

IDK about laughable. It has influence in FPS story telling. The modding community that spawned from it alone made spin offs which are still some of the top game 10-15yrs later.

Edt: Also when I responded to Frex, it was a joke.

I feel words like "greatest" places more emphasis on objective qualities. Objectively speaking, Super Mario Bros is a timeless classic. It paved the way for the modern video game and is just as fun to play today as it was in the 80s.

Then I look at a game like KOTOR. KOTOR does frick all to advance the western RPG genre, has a broken combat system, and can barely run efficiently on modern PCs without tweaking, but it's probably my favorite video game of all time because I love Star Wars and I love the story, characters, and setting.

That issue is just the old engine, its not supported by drivers now. Wouldn't hold it against the game.

You can use VirtualBox and an old boot disc image of Windows XP

Eta: if compatibility mode doesn't work, sometimes it doesn't
