It doesn't look good when your PR department doesn't know what the frick they are talking about.

It seems like Matrick confused always online with once a day, because I really don't seen them requiring the console to always be connected.

Dat spin.

Always-on is referring to a DRM tactic that require some type of internet connection to play a game. While he didn't there wouldn't be any type of online DRM, he said that there is no always-on and that they have gamers' back. He implied there wouldn't be any online DRM.

Digital Foundry spec analysis on the X1. LINK

quote:

In terms of the GPU hardware, hard information was difficult to come by, but one of the engineers did let slip with a significant stat - 768 operations per clock. We know that both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are based on Radeon GCN architecture and we also know that each compute unit is capable of 64 operations per clock. So, again through a process of extrapolation from the drip-feed of hard facts, the make-up of the One's GPU is confirmed - 12 compute units each capable of 64 ops/clock gives us the 768 total revealed by Microsoft and thus, by extension, the 1.2 teraflop graphics core. So that's another tick on the Durango leaked spec that has been transposed across to the final Xbox One architecture and the proof we need that PlayStation 4's 18 CU graphics core has 50 per cent more raw power than the GPU in the new Microsoft console. Now, bearing in mind that we fully expect PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to launch at similar price-points, how did this disparity come about?

I think we are getting way to deep into semantecs here.

Always online to me doesn't equate to once a day.

Exactly. Always on to me would mean I couldn't use it if my connection went down for a few hours or something.

I still think it is bullshite to require a once a day check even to play ofline, but that is another discussion.

Saying per cent and not percent loses all credibility IMO

Will you still say this if Sony comes out with something similar?

you didnt need to go to digital foundry to find that out - i posted something similar (granted without the actual data analysis, just common sense) in the PC discussion thread.
us hardware guys see whats coming -
the xbox is a htpc specializing in gaming
the ps4 is a gaming box with extra capabilities

eta: keep in mind though the xbox and ps4 use very different APUs, they just happen to be both Radeons. the xbox APU is based off the high end steamroller architecture while the ps4 APU is based off the low power jaguar.

Absofrickinglutely.

I have had no problem admitting the bad parts of Sony consoles.

ETA:

So will you agree that it is bullshite?

My philosophy is that if it doesn't directly affect me then I don't care. If I do end up with an Xbox this won't affect me since if I am gaming I am online and the longest I have ever been without internet is a few hours.

I can see where it would bother people though. It just doesn't bother me.

The DRM of Sim City wouldn't bother me either but the limited worlds does which is why I haven't bought it yet.

I'm assuming this once a day check is somehow tied in with the verification of the one disc per live account and the subsequent possibility of limiting the rental of games via Gamefly.

If this is the case, that would really affect how I play games, since my main source of games is by rental. That's what I don't like about it.

Obviously we don't know the details, so its speculation. But if this is the case...

I assumed it was for every console...

I know there's rumored to be a handheld version too.
