Xbone update

Does it update automatically today if it's in instant on mode or does it have to be "on". I am going to actually have some free time this evening and don't want to be waiting on updates if I don't have to

You need to go to settings/system/console to update the console. It's a manual update (at least for mine it was).
ETA: The update and installation didn't take too long for me on my connection. ~15 minutes with most being downloading the update which was about 1100mb.

Yeah and the Backwards comparability update. However, backwards compatibility won't be available until 3pm EST

Didn't even know I should be expecting an update, so it was a bit surprising. I assume I'll like it, but there was already a delay on opening my Netflix app.
"Your app will open in a minute" or some crap popped up after telling my One to go to it. I don't think I've ever seen that happen before.
Eta: and mine clearly auto updated itself as I was never promoted.

I got the update last week and that has only happened to me once so far.
I'm using one of my Halo 5 achievements as a background and it looks great with the new dash
