2 proved that others are capable of creating a good game without his involvement, but I feel like the series is played out.

Not really, it's received fairly well by fans and the dlc has some of the best content in the series. It improved on the original in a lot of ways.

The first one was amazing and is one of the top 5 games I've ever played. Just being immersed into that story and setting was fantastic.

This is counter to what I have seen but I haven't played it to have an opinion on it. I also think nostalgia for 1 has made people forget about how bad parts of it were like the ending.

I initially didn't like some of the multiverse stuff from infinite but now that whole concept and the luteces make the game for me.
It sucks that irrational is now essentially defunct. Ken Levine is doing indie development now to my knowledge.

I won't argue Infinite against the first one since I know how much it is revered, but I could never get past a certain point in 1, never touched 2, but I absolutely loved Infinite.

Infinite was pretentious and empty as Hell. I watched probably one of the best critiques ever on why that game was so overrated by Matthewmatosis on Youtube.

Based on early development trailers, the game was once more dynamic than it turned out to be in its final release.
Songbird was supposed to be a continual threat that stalked the player and the girl throughout the entire game is one example that comes to mind.
I enjoyed the setting and the plot themes regardless but I am disappointed that we probably got a neutered version. That shite happens occasionally though. Mgs v is another recent example of a game that didn't get fully fleshed out.

I remembering reading about the pressure Irrational kept having to make Bioshock more of a shooter. That shite really got in the way of the game at times.

This. Infinite was the first bioshock I played and I felt like the game wasn't meant to be played that way. I was so blown away in the early parts and then it just kind of became this run and gun shooter. Quickly became meh.

I didn't mind the shooting because it was really well done, and I wasn't in love with the first one so that contrast didn't really hit with me.
