On the road headed home from about a two and a half week work trip. Feels so good.

I guess candy crush and flick baseball are going to get a break. I tried to download fallout shelter but maybe I don't have enough memory on my phone.

So this is what a work trip does to you. Completely lose track of days.

Completely exhausted and ready for football. That's what's happening.

Also, almost indifferent to watching the cubs and pirates catch up to the cards right now. So many dang injuries. Don't know how they've held on for so long. If they don't get consistent on offense, they might be in that idiotic play in game.

I know how that is. I'm curious to hear what you think of it, assuming you can get through it. All this Metal Gear hype has me itching to play through it again, but I don't own my PS2 copy any more and don't know that I should buy the HD version at the moment given the imminent release of MGS V.

My initial reaction is that the game still talks to you too much. I realize it's early though.

I think you probably already suspect this, but that's not going to change much as the game goes on. Yes, all of these games are long on setup, and that is an initial hurdle, but characters like to have long conversations about big concepts before and/or after almost any major gameplay event in all of the games. If you aren't interested in what they're talking about or the characters, I don't know that the gameplay alone is going to carry it for you.

I suppose I view the Metal Gear games in a similar fashion as something like Gone Home, The Stanley Parable, or Heavy Rain. It's not 100% game and it's not 100% narrative. It's something weird and different in between and each title in the series adjusts those 2 dials seemingly at random.

For example there is one scene in Metal Gear Solid 4 where all you are doing is pushing the control stick up to get a character to move through a dangerous environment. Minimal "gameplay" but it's one of the most memorable scenes in any video game I can recall playing because of what it means within the story.

It would be interesting to hear thoughts on the game from someone playing it outside the bigger Metal Gear context, but I understand if it just doesn't grab you.

I wish they kept the MGS Database on PSN. It chronicled every character, story event, etc all on a timeline for people to catch up before MGS4. Would be nice for the series' finale.
