I was debating on whether or not to save up for a $500 steam machine the Alienware alpha one... Seems like a great addition being that I only have next gen consoles and I could play older titles for cheap on there. Also I can play indie PC titles ... Worth it?

You realize a steam machine is just a custom built PC, right?

I have nothing to base this on, but I would think it's a pre-built that you can't really upgrade?

Do you want actual advice or are you just going to buy one? Don't have a lot of time to waste today.

They're cheaper for a reason. They have lesser components in them.

and smaller

This is the size of my current build.

Neither of these are actually mine but it's the same case I am using

Some people don't. Some people have absolutely no idea how to build a PC and don't have the time (or want to) to sit down and watch YouTube videos on how to do it. It's why consoles sell so well. There's no worrying about upgrading, assembly or if your machine is powerful enough to run a game. You just pay and play.

Are they compatible with "aftermarket" PC parts, or do they have to be Steam Box parts?

I would buy a steam machine if it was the only way to play HL3 and Portal3. It's not too much to ask for those 2 games.

The CPU is standard LGA 1150, but since all of Alphas use T series chips (the lower wattage versions of the standard desktop counterparts), I would suspect the custom motherboard wouldn't handle beyond the 35W TDP CPUs.

The RAM is SO-DIMM (laptop). The GPU is a proprietary design of an overclocked 860M. It is soldered and cannot be upgraded. Every decision in the design of the Alpha was made for the sake of fitting the tiny form factor at the sacrifice of upgradeability. It's a disposable steam box.

Listen to this fella. I built my pc two months ago based on his recommendations alone and I don't regret it at all. Great machine.
