I'm finally breaking down and giving this a shot. It looks alright, especially for a F2P. What are the must-know concepts before I dive in?

Buying your weapons quickly is the biggest one.

Also don't just run all gung-ho into the fight b/c you'll get capped and be forced to watch the rest of the game play out.

However, when you are killed, follow different players to see how they fight to get a better idea of where all you should be on the maps.

Learn the buy menu.

Number one thing imo is learn the maps.

Aiming just takes time. Don't spray and pray with rifles.

Won't be an issue. The only game mode I ever played on CoD was S&D. From what I understand that's all CS:GO is, which I'm fine with.

So bursting is the best way to go about it? It's gonna be weird getting used to not having to use iron sights again.

It does have a casual death match mode where you respawn, might be useful in learning the weapons.

Steel (NA pro) has made a few great videos that really help new players. I would recommend watching these if you have the time:

Video on aiming and proper movement

How to play the map de_Mirage

How to play de_Cache

A match that Steel streamed between his team and one of the top teams in NA. You get to hear how they communicate and see how they work together as a team

Also, to get better aim try not to play Valve's DM. In the server browser there are some really good deathmatch servers that you can choose from (I would recommend thefragshack's servers). Just type deathmatch in the search bar to access them.

If you're using an AK for example, you'll have different ways you should fire based on how far the target is away. Ak is generally 2 shot burst at long distance. The first shot from an AK is dead center so long as you're not moving.

If you get in a firefight with someone, never stay still for too long, it should be short burst, move, short burst, move. Crouching improves your accuracy and has its appropriate uses, but noobs tend to overuse crouch. I would tell you not to use it at all.

When your velocity is zero, you have damn near perfect accuracy. When moving, shitty accuracy. If you're strafing left and then you strafe back to the right.. there is an "in between" spot where your velocity will be equal to zero for a brief moment, that is when you shoot.

Youtube for "csgo adren" or "csgo warowl" or other type tutorial vids.

Also, public servers with 20+ people are not how the game is competitively played.. 5v5 is a much better representation of the games depth

I really like the guns with the sights. The AUG and SG. Doing pretty decently. Got aiming down pretty quickly I think. Checking corners came naturally since I'm pretty well practiced in FPS basics from CoD for years. Haven't gone negative in a deathmatch outside of one game. I think once I learn the maps I'll hop into competitive.

I play this game a lot. And have been for a long time...
Step 1)
Just get into games and move around. And shoot a lot. You will figure it out.
Step 2)
Be prepared to get frustrated a lot.
Step 3)
Lower your mouse sensititvity. I would recommend changing your mouse sensititvity in windows to 6 of 11 , make sure mouse Accel is OFF, your mouse drivers to 400dpi and then playing in game with a sensititvity of 2.5 or lower.
Step 4)
Be prepared to get frustrated again.
Step 5)
There are some good articles about settings and posts on reddit that will help as well.
Step 6)
Have fun
