I'm pretty pissed off at sony right now. I like the ps4 better but their network has always been fricking spotty as hell.
They need to fricking open the budget to upgrade the network and maybe try hiring hackers of their own to hunt down hackers that try dos attacks on the network.

Any object that can connect to the Internet is able to be DOS'd moron based on the way the internet was built and configured. It's not Sony's problem to create a solution the entire internet had had since the beginning.

Yeah it's true that anyone can get DDOS'ed, but Sony has been notoriously bad at filtering requests, stopping the attacks, and getting things back up and running. There's no doubt they have some major problems that need to be addressed

yep other companies shake them off pretty quickly. IMO they need to consider hiring other hackers to dig up personal info on those that attack them so they can be handled by lawn enforcement. It would probably save them some coin especially if people start to jump ship to xbox because its up and running quicker

And that brings up another problem. Legislation on "cyber crimes" is still in infantile stages so actually convicting these dumbasses is always a shitfest. And with this kind of attack, what do you even charge them with? With other types of hacking you can usually get them for identity or credit card fraud, but they haven't really done that.

All the hackers and people trying to help have said that Sony's network and infrastructure is complete shite and outdated. Their firewall is pretty nonexistent too and that the attacks have actually fried several of their servers because of the above-mentioned reasons.
Steam, Tor, Xbox, etc have withstood the attacks better because they are on better networks and can also recover faster because of this.
It cost the hackers less (bandwidth cost) and is easier to take down PSN and PSN also takes way longer to recover from what I have read.

Not lying. I'm on PS3 playing Ghosts. BR area
Posted on 12/27/14 at 12:16 pm to LSU999
PS3 and 360 servers haven't been targeted like Xbone and PS4. They have been up pretty much the whole time or at least more often.
Posted on 12/27/14 at 12:40 pm to stout
They could only take down Steam once, for like 5 minutes
Never tried again.

This statement is also entirely inaccurate.

I'm not saying this isn't true, but I find it very hard to swallow. PCI compliance alone would force thier network to be somewhat up to par.
You cannot keep customer financial information stored without being PCI compliant and there SHOULD be regular PCI audits for flaws in the network.
That being said, customer information may be stored separately from PSN sign-in servers and therefore those servers are not regularly audited.
