lol... so I found an ISO of Win 8 that I downloaded a long time ago. Though I'd try the upgrade option.

- You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc or go to LINK to see how to install Windows and keep your files and settings.

That there is what you call a conundrum.

I'm reluctantly going to do a clean install, because I migrated everything to the new SSD and have two copies of my Windows 7 image. If I hate it, I can just go back to my old SSD and migrate it back over to the 500GB Evo again.
I'm already suspecting it will be hot garbage. For one thing, it looks like I can't do split-screen view of anything except for Windows apps. I snap browsers and word docs for split view all the time, across both monitors (viewing 4+ windows at once). If there's no acceptable workaround for that, Windows 8.1 is dead to me.

Could not find a single tutorial that said that. Everything said it only worked in the Metro GUI with windows apps, and the instructions mentioned "swipe you finger" and that was the point I stopped reading.

Everything is basically the same as 7 except the added metro

Did you install classic shell or no?

A new game is finally being bundled with GPUs. Nvidia is adding the new borderlands to their cards.

Meanwhile AMD still offers your choice of $5 steam sale games, and Thief.
EDIT: Windows 8.1 is annoying as frick out of the box. For starters, it locked down all of my storage HDDs, telling me I don't have permission to save there. I stripped all the UAC settings off, shared the drives with everyone, full control, and then went through individual folders to uncheck "read only." One drive finally worked, and now I'm dealing with the other one. The Read Only setting reverts itself as soon as I uncheck it. I think the sharing security settings are what finally fixed it. Really dumb.
Under the hood is the same, but accessing it is different.
It fricking installed Catalyst and AMD drivers behind the scenes. I did keep the option checked that I wanted it to install drivers it recognized, but never expected that it would actually install the full monty of AMD shite. I wanted the beta, so I'll have to deal with that later.
I miss Aero Glass.
I changed my wallpaper, and it reverted itself to the original one several times as I installed new programs. That was annoying. A reboot seemed to solve that.
I do like the way it natively handles dual monitors. I can use the cluttered metro interface on one monitor when/if necessary.
It is sickeningly pandering and watered down on the surface -- Apple-like but more childish looking out of the box. Luckily, the functionality is still there, and the freedom.
If I could figure why the frick it initially locked me out from letting me save files to my own goddamn hard drives.

They had a good competition going for a while. Now it's like they are giving you left over keys

Just bought a Crucial 512GB SSD

Let's compare crystaldiskmark epeens!
Here's mine:
Looks like RAMdisk scores. That's because Samsung Magician Software has an option to enable "RAPID" mode, which uses 1GB of your RAM as cache. Not exactly noticeable in general use, but makes for a nice benchmark showoff.
Here are the "regular" results with RAPID disabled:

That will have to wait. The only SSD I have is my 240GB Samsung in my laptop. I gave Dev my OCZ SSD because I am a nice guy...and because I felt bad it took me a month to ship him the parts he bought from me.
I don't have my HTPC running right now because I only have an HDD full of games which is why I bought that Crucial SSD this morning so I can put it back together this weekend.

Here's my Sandisk Extreme 120gb and Samsung 840 Pro 128gb RAID 0 array
I don't know why the write speeds are so low, but those read speeds
And here's my 840 Pro 256gb

Have you tested RAM caching on the single 840 Pro?
