Open World Fatigue

I just finished Horizon: Zero Dawn and now I'm deep into Zelda: BoTW and it's amazing and I'm enjoying it on the switch. After reading the article from Zelda director saying all Zelda games from this point on will be open world it got me thinking. article
Does anyone else have open world fatigue? I loved Final Fantasy XV, Witcher 3, even MGSV and Neir, Zelda, HZD. And we still have RDR2, and much more coming.
Are we at a point in gaming where the hardware is allowing for flush open worlds and developers are taking advantage of that to the tune of linear games becoming extinct or is it just a current and passing fad?
Maybe it's just because the last 3 big games I sunk time into (and am currently sinking) were all open world but I'm a little burned out on it.
If Zelda wasn't Zelda I'd probably would have skipped it for a while before coming back to it. But BoTW does open world so very well it is an almost 10/10 game if not perfect.
Will this trend continue and is it just a product of the tech and hardware that's out there or is it just a fad?

I haven't played Zelda yet, so I can't speak for that. I know playing through Mafia 3 made me a lot less interested in Watch Dogs 2.
I don't necessarily think though that open world games are a bad thing. I do think some games transition to open world at the expense of the narrative. MGSV, Dragon Age Inquisition, Final Fantasy XV, and Mass Effect Andromeda all suffer from making the transition to "open world." I would rather story-heavy role games play out in a more linear, directed fashion.
Witcher 3 is an exception as I thought they figured out how to make an open world RPG without sacrificing the overarching story. I'd say that a lot of the side activities actually enhance the main story.

I'm sort of burned out but then again I've been playing FO4 for the past 5 months nonstop. I like games like Borderlands and God of War that are sort of open world, where you have big areas separated by doors or whatever. You can call it a cross between Metroidvania and open world I guess.

having said that, Zelda gets a pass. it's more than the go here and do this and come back routine.
open world games often feel like chores. Zelda does not.
the last gen really had me into more linear games like uncharted, last of us, Arkham asylum (not quite open world, perfect in scale)

Nier, while open world, does not feel like open world. Route B doesn't appear to be open world at all.

Most of these open world games are a facade.
Basic fetch missions in a decent sized world giving the impression that they are fully open. When most areas are just rehashed.
I play alot of 7 days to die with friends and even here its the same.

Im playing Dark Souls 2 right now, never played any other Souls games before, but they seem to have the right idea with the open world, at least for an RPG.

Open world games that actually use the world in ways other than an artificial way of extending the play time are fine.
Unfortunately a lot of them these days are huge just for the sake of being huge.
It reminds me of how 3D platformers were damn near killed off b/c lazy arse programmers would turn them into collect-a-thons that had no real justification for all the item collecting other than to make it seem like there was more content than there really was.

I'm not fatigued. Just depends on the story to go along with that open world.
Some neglect the story and just add piles of fetch quests. I don't even mind fetch quests if the central story is good and as long as the fetch garbage helps me level up skills.
If the fetch garbage doesn't really boost me at all and if the story is weak, then the game sucks. Has nothing to do with open world.
I have enjoyed the hell out of Resident Evil 7, Unchartered 1-4, and Last of Us. I didn't have to grind anything which was nice. So maybe I had a little open world grind fatigue but not enough to stop me from getting the next big game.
Holding off on ME4 until they've patched it up.

I'm more easily fatigued by games that use open world as a way to extend playtime, as mentioned by others in here.

This. The hub area system is far superior to normal open world. Drop me in a dense, carefully designed area with quests and things to do. Don't give me a huge empty map with empty side quests and collectibles. I don't want to be collecting twigs and berries and shite to make a new pouch.
As good as Horizon is, I'm already getting fatigued. A lot of the same shite. Thank god the combat is so good

I do like the illusion of open world that some games do well. Dark Souls does a great job of it. You can go anywhere, but you'll probably get slaughtered if you don't go where the game designers expect you to go.
The Witcher 3 has that at points too. Running around minding my own buisness then stumble into a nest of red skull nekkers. Then run like hell straight into red skull Fallen Knights. That's when you just reload and just save that area for much later.
Annoying as hell in the Far Cry games.

Just finished Horizon (after putting 30 or so hours into witcher 3) and it was fantastic, but I'm kind of glad to transition right into something like Persona 5, which is not a big open world.
Personally it's just about mixing things up. I wouldn't want to play big open world game after huge open world game
That said, I do think Horizon excelled in not being too overwhelmingly dense and huge

I'm still hooked on skyrim. Mods basically make that game infinitely playable

Have you played the Invasion of Admiral Thrawn campaign mod with the magicka light sabers mod?

I enjoy them. I don't play many non spots games ever though.
