dropping a gun / rifle then going into build mode then scrapping the weapon, lowers the build limit.
All those useless guns are worth something. they help you lower the build limit.
I never tried the drop / store. I always do the drop / scrap because i need the steel / wood / copper / other useful components. Just an added bonus that scrapping them in build mode for some reason drops the build limit.
Hope they don't fix this but if they do there are also mods that remove or change the build limit.

You only have so much stuff you can build. The settlement bar shows your status. It changes to yellow as it fills up and then you can't build anymore.
dropping a bunch of guns on the ground, opening the build tools, then scrapping the guns you dropped will make a maxed yellow limit drop.
Some settlements have a large enough build limit you will never notice it. Jamaica Plains gives you barely any room to add things so the gun trick is nice there.

Got it. For some reason I misinterpreted that as some barter glitch.
Does anyone know where the hell I can find the legendary explosive combat shotgun? I found it on both of my previous play throughs early on (though I don't recall where) and I'm at level 78 now and have yet to discover it.

I just looked up info on the build limit. I had no idea that existed. I have been dropping things to break them down since you get more materials that way anyway so I haven't run into this. It looks like this was put in place for performance reasons as far as I can tell. Apparently people that do the glitch have reported framerate issues in the settlements with a lot of stuff. Peasants...

was playing a while yesterday.
picked up a new gun i'd never run into before. "Spray & Pray". Tommy Gun with explosive rounds. Picked it up from a mobile vendor outside of Diamond City.
This is my "2nd play-through" and I'm only lvl 18. Old xbox account got perma-banned, so i lost my lvl 42 character and my original play-through.

Probably a random drop - personally, the fixed-location shotgun with a bleed effect is my shotty of choice.

Initially, I didn't use the trick because I figured the limit was for performance reasons.
However, since I have a 980, I finally gave in. The tiny build limit at Jamaica Plains forced me to give in to the darkside, then I also used it a bunch at other locations.
As huge as the spectacle island limit is, I had to double it to finish my supreme resort.
Never noticed any major frame problems.
