I'd love to have one too. If I ever went that route, I'd probably get a pinball machine before any other cabinet. Moving basketball goal. Skee ball. Donkey Kong. Mortal Kombat II. That's about it. The golden arcade age was a little before my time and I grew up in a small town

What PR disaster did Nintendo have?

Wii U. Marketing disaster would have been the correct term.

when really since the PSOne came out they have been on top of the VG industry

Uh no. Sony has been on top for only two generations. The N64 destroyed the PS1, PS2 destroyed the gamecube and Xbox, the Wii a won the next generation with the 360 behind it and right now the PS4 is winning this generation.

Nobody came close to touching Nintendo on console sales until the PS2 came out.

At first.

Then PS1 caught up and surpassed. This is why you saw late, rushed ports of games like Tony Hawk on the N64. But it was too little, too late. In terms of numbers, PS1 beat N64 hands down. N64 lost market share because of PS1's incredible third party support.

ETA:
PlayStation 102.49 million shipped (74.34 million PlayStation, 28.15 million PSone) (as of March 31, 2005)[39]
Nintendo 64 32.93 million (as of March 31, 2005) [40] Wiki link

I was looking for those numbers when you got to it. The only generation Nintendo do beat Sony was with the wii. It's just my opinion but the wii was not better than the ps4 or 360.

Yep. They focussed so much on the controller that everyone just assumed the black thing in the background was a regular Wii. And to be honest, at first that's what I thought. I thought that the Wii U was just an improved model of the Wii with a new controller. Kind of like the new 3DS models. They shouldn't have named it Wii U either. That was the main source of confusion for a lot of people in my opinion.

It should of never been called WiiU.

It needed a completely different name.

I remember the mass confusion on social media about it. That was some funny stuff. Oh nintendo.

And this nonsense in 2013

I also think they shouldn't have included the gamepad.

The gamepad is what sets it apart. Imagine a late 20s to mid 30s guy who grew up on Nintendo. Now he's grown up and married, but he can play full games, new or retro, on the gamepad without taking up the tv. The kids can still play their xbox or the wife can still watch her stupid bridal shite and he can still hang out with them in the living room.

That's the angle they should market it at. The off-tv capability of the gamepad is not being highlighted enough.

I like it for that reason but they haven't done anything special with it. They haven't made us need the gamepad, just enjoy it as an accessory.

Not true but the post under yours outlines it.

Just coming to reiterate this.

this.

I really think the NX is going to be a hybrid console, further playing off the what the Wii U could do initially with off TV capability.

It will be an amazing handheld that will plug into your TV when at home.

Developers will only have to develop for a single Nintendo system.

Nintendo's combining of both handheld and console departments could be sign of this coming to fruition.

The problem with doing the hybrid is that it will probably be expensive. But if you add the VC content as well as all the amazing handheld and console games combined on one console, the content will justify the price.

If this can be done, it's the right solution.

Almost everyone thinks that's what is gonna happen.

And I will buy it.

Immediately.

Yes. Everything they do is super high quality and they have the same focus as before, creating games that are high-quality, bug free, fun and don't take themselves too seriously.
This right here is exactly why Nintendo will always be relevant. Their exclusives are top notch. Sure they released the Wii-U a little earlier than they should have given the amount of games that were available for it on launch, but people are falling all over themselves to get the consoles and arguably the biggest release on the entire platform isn't even set to release this year (Zelda).
