Starting play this over the weekend. Is the main story short and just has replay value because you get to play as the different characters on the additional playthroughs? It's an ok game so far, just not sure what all the praise for it was for...

The replays aren’t that simple to explain. It isn’t like replaying an rpg as a warrior one time and a mage the next.

they aren't different playthroughs... that's all I'm going to say, but yeah, they are not different playthroughs in any way

wait....what? they are very different

Rooster, knock out all your sidequests in Route A, then you will get some new ones in Route B (you can also do any that you missed in A). Route B is similar to Route A but with some divergences, new sequences, and new story insight.

Route C/D is entirely new content.

Trust me, just keep playing. When you get the epic intro credit sequence, you're about 60% done. Automata has stuck with me for months. Very unique experience with some unforgettable moments

Really can't recommend it enough. Just keep playing and enjoy what they've created. :-P

Did you ever play any of the other Nier/Drakengard games?

I watched a playthrough of Drakengard 3 and LOVED it. Just didnt want to deal with the performance issues and grind out the endings. I may play through it one day, love the story and characters

I'm going to pick up the original Nier soon and play through it. Got some details spoiled on Route A from a catch-up vid i watched prior to Automata, but im relatively unspoiled on it.

I will likely watch a playthrough of Drak 1 as well. 2 wasn't directed by Taro, so im not interested.

I have extra copies of Nier on standby to spread the good news if you really need it.

I loved Drakengard 1 and 3 (skipped 2 for same reason), but they're as easy to play as Automata. Drakengard's is especially dated (although, it's still pretty fun, just not as good). Drakengard 1/3 doesn't have as much intricacy and intrigue as Nier/N:A, but they're definitely a lot darker.

that's what I was meaning to say, but it got lost in word translation... I was just telling the OP that it's not as simple as "just another playthrough" - it's sooooooo much more

So, once you get to the "first" ending, that's not really considered "beating" the game?

The first ending is more like the ending for chapter 1 of 6

correct. you have a ton left. the first 2 routes are like Acts 1 and 2. Like I said, Route B is very similar to Route A and you will likely blaze through it, but be sure to pay attention to the new story insights.

after that, the training wheels come off and its balls to the wall

I just got done with Route B, I'm already mind fricked and I know its getting crazier from here on out.

What a unique way to tell a story.

I guess I just beat route A? And if I skipped most all of the side quests do I really need to go back or is it worth it to do them?

Chapter select opens at the end of the game. They’re there for fleshed out lore and exp. don’t have do do them, but I enjoyed most of them

you finished?! Amazing, huh? It will stick with you for far longer than most games. Lots of themes and moments that pop into my head months and months after finishing
