for all you OT PC gamers:

i've decided to buy myself a graduation present since i havent been able to play any games this entire semester. so to honor the onslaught of relentless video gameage that im about to partake in, ive decided to upgrade my gaming rig.

I'm seriously considering a SSD. They're really expensive, but this computer would absolutely fly with one. I havent really looked into them much, but does anyone have any recommendations? I don't want to drop too much on it, but i need it to fit a windows partition and at least the system files from a linux install. I'll probably keep my current drive in for auxiliary storage and the home partition for linux so I shouldnt need too much.

As for video cards, this is probably less needed, but I want to move away from ATI if possible. The card i have (below) is not a terrible card by any means, I'm just looking for an affordable upgrade.

I'd rather not drop more than $300 on the whole shebang, but i know that premium parts come at a premium price.

Current Specs:
- AMD Phenom X4 9550, 6GB ram
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 Hard Drive - 250GB, 7200RPM, 16MB, Serial ATA-300
- Radeon HD 3870 Overclocked Video Card - 512MB GDDR4

here are some of things I'm looking at:

I don't know what you're planning on playing, what resolution you need, etc. but that 450 is not all that great. Check out the benchmarks: LINK

If I were in the market I'd look into getting something recertified like this: LINK.
I know it's a good bit more than you're looking to spend, but it's a good value. If you register your EVGA card when it comes in, it carries the same warranty as an unopened box card.

I still wouldn't buy an SSD. I would buy a $250-ish video card.

LOVE the EVGA stuff.

You can get a really nice card in the 200 dollar range. If you want something that will last you get a 6870, or a GTX 460.

Dont get a SSD for gaming for sure, it makes no difference at all except maybe like 15% faster load screens, which u wont have a lot of anyway with a AMD Phenom X4 955 Black Edition.

The money u will save on SSD will make a much bigger difference spent on a video card

It all depends on the kind of gaming you plan on doing. My build is

AMD Athlon x4 640 3 GHz quad core processor
AMD Radeon HD 6850, 1 GB VRAM
4 GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM

You don't need lots of RAM, 4 gigs will suffice. I recommend 6 but 4 will get you by pretty well unless you multitask tons at once at all times.

My build cost me $650 and I haven't run across something it can't run at max graphics. SC2 doesn't dip below 35 FPS. When I played Rift at max graphics I'd get ~60 FPS, except in towns and in rift events.. Those were about 20 FPS. But I built my rig in a way where it's easily upgradeable. Whenever I get some extra cash I am going to buy another 6850 and Xfire them together.

I've always been an Nvidia guy myself, but I've been very satisfied with my Radeon.

You need a ATI 6950 2GB. Unlock the shaders on that bad boy as well.

I have SSD and it's great, but its not a necessity, just a luxury. Your money is better spent on a video card. I have a 6870 and it's fantastic.
