kind of feel that people that make statements like that pertaining to games like Witcher and Skyrim probably need to stay away from games like Witcher and Skyrim

I spent wayyyyyyy too much time on Skyrim and ff7 and 8. Probably why I don’t do it now bc I know what I can do

I can't speak to FF, but exploration in TW3 is vastly more interesting and fulfilling than Skyrim. Skyrim's side quests just kinda sucked arse compared to previous ES installments.

You really, really missed out. Most of the best quests in the game were optional content.

I was reminded with BG3 recently, how well fleshed out are the side quests in Witcher 3.

BG3 is similar.

Those games have ruined mindless fetch and escort missions in games. Fallout 2 is another one.

You even have side quests with linking missions and effect on the main story.

If you skip the side quests in any of the above 3 games, you are robbing more than half the game from yourself.

That isn't even an exaggeration:

Howlongtobeat.com

Witcher 3

Main Story: 51.5 hours
Main + Extras (Side Quests): 103 hours

BG3

Main Story: 41.5 hours
Main and Side Quests: 81.5 hours

I'm not, is it just me?

No, and the proliferation of FPS and MOBA games bears that out.

There are pretty much two types of gamers: those who want to play combat games where you have to be hyper-vigilant at almost all times and those who want to experience a story (read also as: feel like they have a personal investment in the game/character/story).

I would wager that many gamers vacillate between the two to varying degrees with the minority being those on the fringe. I fall into the latter category far more often than I do the former one.

For the FPS/MOBA games, story matters little or not at all so the creators can focus far more on combat balance, maps, etc. For those who want more of a story, the story becomes every bit as important as mechanics.

The problem is that writing a story, crafting the CGI, etc. all takes a LOT more time and money. Today, most gamers want a sandbox aspect with some sort of main storyline where their choices matter.

I got downvotes for suggesting Starfield was just a newer NMS, so I guess I'll get what's coming on this one too

That's about like saying Apex: Legends is just a newer Call of Duty. In a very general sense (like "they are in the same genre") it's true, but likely not once you get more granular.

People probably downvoted you about NMS because Starfield is going to have hundreds of hours of more content and it'll 100x more polished than NMS.

Lmao this dude thinks a Bethesda game will be polished at release. I played Fallout 4 some last weekend. Fell through the map once and the game froze in VATS multiple times. We'll be lucky if Starfield is ever polished.

I don't need a story in everything, certainly. Some games, like Rimworld you kind of make the entire story yourself based on who you get and what happens.

With Civ-style games, the random map and tech tree sort of write a story of sorts if you want to think that way.

I don't need a story for racing games, fighting games or shooters (and I don't play very many of any of them lately, although I want to get into racing games with the grandchildren). They great enhancements to enjoyment for things like Skyrim or Red Dead Redemption.

...once modders clean up the UI and fix a shite ton of bugs and obvious issues that the Bethesda "genius but flawed" team left in.

I'm not negative. I'm a "shut up and take my money" guy for Starfield, with the caveat that I'm likely not a Day 1 buyer and will wait for early reviews and the modding to mature.

Just as one example - Skyrim is one of the greatest games of all time, regardless of era, regardless of genre and it was borderline unplayable without the SkyUI mod.
