I'm not, is it just me?

I'm 21ish years into what I would consider modern-day gaming and my favorite games are essentially shooters..I can't remember Atari/Dreamcast-era games that were story-driven and the only games I vividly remember from my Nintendo days are ExciteBike, Battletoads, Waverace, Pilotwings, and a few more that seem to lead into the reason I like what I like now.

Old school CoD..the BF series (even the shite ones), Tom Clancy-named games where you can skip the cut scenes, etc.

I absolutely hate "your princess is in another castle" and "the settlers need more food" storylines

I got downvotes for suggesting Starfield was just a newer NMS, so I guess I'll get what's coming on this one too

Depends on the type of gamer you are

I have friends that are casual gamers that only play shooters and that's cool

It's one of my bigger hobbies so I go through different moods. Right now I'm only Halo/Fortnite in prep for the amount of time I'll be playing Starfield exclusively.

People probably downvoted you about NMS because Starfield is going to have hundreds of hours of more content and it'll 100x more polished than NMS. It's like comparing a Ferrari and a Daewoo

It will probably be less polished considering the game struggles to run 30FPS on consoles. Can't call a game polished that is dropping to 25FPS regularly. That and the combat still looks quite bad, not as the horror show it was a year ago but still bad.

I can see the resemblance in areas.

Shooters didn't really escape that type of criticism/acclaim either though. Typically the CoDs generally agreed to be the best also have what are considered to be among the best campaigns. Thus the reverence for characters like Soap and Ghost.

I’m much the same… sometimes I’ll play a shooter, then I’ll want to play something like BG3, Pillars of Eternity 2, or Fallout, then I’ll be into something like World of Warships.

I don't have time to sink a thousand hours into an online shooter with no actual end goal. Give me a game that has a good story and allows me to beat it in under 50 hours and sticks with me long after.

God of War Ragnorak was awesome.

Plague Tale Requiem was great.

Im all in for more games like those.

Each person has their own preference. Some people lean further one way or another.

I loathe shooters mostly because I suck and just get gunned down by an unseen opponent every 30 seconds. I used to enjoy the Modern Warfare and Call of Duty games when they included really compelling campaigns, but now multiplayer is all they're known for.

I also love games where you just play and progress. Stardew Valley, Farming Simulator, Snowrunner. I don't need a great story if it's good progressive gameplay.

Then I also love an amazing RPG. Witcher 3, Mass Effect trilogy, RDR2. Though I can't replay those as much as the progression type games.

No Man's Sky ended up being really great but was a bit short on depth. If they can bring a Skyrim type experience into space, I'll play it for the next decade.

Depends on why you game. If you game as stand in for sport, you'll be drawn to the games you're drawn to. If you game as a stand in for other forms of narrative media like movies, books, etc, then you'll be drawn to other types of games.

Some people would rather watch American Gladiators than Breaking Bad. Some would rather watch Breaking Bad than American Gladiators. Some enjoy both; some enjoy neither.

I used to enjoy competitive gaming, but now I would rather scratch my competitive itch in other ways. Now I game for the enjoyment that comes from experiencing something that was specifically crafted to be experienced in a particular way. Neither is right or wrong. Just different priorities.

If I was a betting man, I would bet that starfield is going to be mediocre rather than really good. There is a lot working against it. AAA games aren't exactly killing it.

It could be a good game but I don't like the trajectory of Bethesda with Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. There are actually a lot of indications that Bethesda isn't as talent rich of a company as they used to be. Don't get your hopes up.

I would be more confident in the game if it was a 2D sidescroller with SNES style graphics. I just don't get the emphasis on graphics over gameplay. People get burned time and time again by games that advertise all this tech and the game ends up being a hollow mess with bad gameplay design.

Enjoy your xbox. Based on sales data, you're in the minority.

I like both, few games have a good cohesive story though. I haven't watched more than 5 seconds of a single story scene in diablo 4. Starfield will probably be the same.

Do you brew your herbal tea before or after you open up your MacBook to post?

Nah man I'm not really into tea. All I'm saying is I'm more confident in 2 nerds making a game like terraria in their garage than a team of 500 people with video game design degrees making a 200 million dollar game in modern times.

I like optional stories - dig in as much or as little as you’d like.

Which is yet another reason I believe in Fromsoft superiority. You can go down the lore rabbit hole (my choice) or just “STR/FTH goes wham” till your heart’s content.

I'm not gonna lie. I hate stories. Why does every damn game have to have a story? I don't care, I want gameplay. Fromsoft games are excellent.

I've played all Halos and I skipped every cinema scene because I don't care about the story, the gameplay is excellent.

Unless the game is Witcher 3, there is no reason to have a long drawn out story.

I like games with limited story.
I like games that are heavy on story.

What I don't like are MOOVIE games.

Watch cutscene, walk slowly while characters talk about feelings, scripted action set piece, QTE, watch cutscene and get excited for next cutscene.

It was interesting when games first started doing those things, but it's been boring, games journalist bait for the past 10 years.

FWIW I've played every CoD campaign every made and the newer Modern Warfare games are pretty damn good. I'd say Modern Warfare 2019 is my favorite campaign of all time.

I like to game to enter other worlds that seem cool. I like to read for the same reason.

I like sci fi and fantasy books..and games.

I enjoy Baulders Gate
Red dead Redemption
Mass effect
BATTLEFIELD
Dota 2
World of Warcraft
halo
Lots of money and time into Dedtiny 2
World of Warships recently

And I'm looking forward to Starfield as it seems like a skyrim in space.

Some people go deep in one style and that's cool. Some people just wanna "see new places" I am not good at competitive shooters but I like to play them occasionally too..so my son can whoop me in them
