It's their second consecutive year to win the award. This game started poorly due to a rushed release/expectations of a multiplayer Skyrim, but it has improved immensely since its 2014 launch. It still occasionally suffers from the mixed/poor reception it received early on by people who haven't played since, but I've played MMO's for a long time and this is the most fun I've had since DAoC(which had a heavy influence on ESO's PvP system). They just announced the Morrowind expansion and this week player housing is introduced, so the game is in a good place right now for those wanting to give it a shot/retry.

I just can't pull the trigger. I'm forever scarred by what I experienced in the closed beta.

Well, a couple of months ago they released a massive patch (like 40gb) called "One Tamriel" that lifted all level and zone restrictions. It basically scaled all content to allow players of any level to play together, regardless of alliance(except in the PvP zone Cyrodiil). Players at max level can play with low-level players and everyone receives rewards/loot relative to their own level, and includes all (edit: non-veteran)group dungeons and world content. This allows veteran players to play with a friend that just started the game and receive equitable rewards without being forced to start a new character.

The zone scaling is similar to Skyrim and Oblivion, so when you enter a zone you no longer need to think about the content being too high or low for your level. This was a refreshing change as it made every zone feel worthwhile, as high level players now have a reason to visit what were previously low-level zones that offered them nothing. It removed a lot of traditional MMO barriers and provides incentive for players to explore the game world, which is what the Elder Scrolls series is all about.

the theory that everything is open is a farce

i still cannot port to the new lands, and i still cannot port to cyrodil, except for PVP BS.

For those who bought the game, DLC should of been free. And the monthly service is not worth the price, for so little.

i still play it, but this new leveling system is horrible.

That sounds awful.

Well I think it's worth a try if you're into MMO's. It's free after you buy it anyway.

It is for more experienced players, as the lowbies obviously suck. However I should mention that this applies to normal dungeons which are mostly casual gameplay in terms of difficulty, but it allows you to play somewhat competitive content with your friends that are new to the game, help low-level guildmates, etc. Veteran modes of the same dungeons can only be played by higher level players and are similar to heroic modes of WoW (at least in the older expansions). They have much more challenging mechanics but offer substantial, end-game types of rewards.

Every DLC to this point is accessible to subscribers, and can bought individually or in modestly-priced combo packs for those unwilling to subscribe. The DLC is nice, but the crafting bag (only available to subscribers) alone is worth the subscription for anyone who wants to avoid inventory hell.

You don't HAVE to pvp in Cyrodiil once you go there. The zone (of which there are 3 other less-crowded versions than the standard) is absolutely massive and nearly all pvp action occurs on the central portion of the map, leaving open 2/3 of it to do the normal exploration stuff. Either way, you're talking about a single zone that is open to pvp while the other 20+ are exclusively pve, and complaining about having to pay for the first expansion to a game that has been released for three years and is normally free.

In the past two years, they have released the champion system, imperial city, the justice system, thieves' guild, dark brotherhood, one tamriel, housing, and in June, Morrowind, which introduces a new class, zone, and pvp battlegrounds. I don't mind supporting a game that consistently releases good content.

Takes away a lot of the incentive to level and gear up. Then once you get up to the endgame, you still have to babysit new players in dungeons. No thanks.

The kind of content you're talking about with babysitting casuals and lowbies exists in normal dungeons. Veteran players have a reason to run them because they can get gear-set drops and improve their quality through crafting. Veteran mode dungeons drop better gear but are more difficult and are only available to players post 50.

I downloaded it last weekend but haven't logged in. I played about a year ago and was seemingly having a good time with it, but then I think I started playing Black Desert and left TESO

If any of you are thinking of buying ESO make sure to buy the Gold edition, it comes with all the currently released DLC and some extras.

It's $30 and comes with $50+ worth of DLC alone

Only thing I wish I would've known is that once a day you can get a huge xp bonus from doing a random dungeo and will really speed up the leveling process

I played it last year and it got old and repetitive. I was casting the same spells over and over because it was the only one worth a frick. I think it was soul siphon or soul drain. i also kinda got tired of researching all the crafting items and stuff. It just didnt feel rewarding enough and confusing at times. Anyway i might buy it again and make a melee character
