Is it necessary to have first played ME1 to enjoy ME2?

No, but recommended. Makes you feel more immersed and invested.

I bought 2 and played about an hour of it, but now I'm thinking about going get 1 and play it first to get the whole experience.

Plus I hear that it is going to be a trilogy.

I don't see how you would understand 99% of what is going on without playing the first one.

It's best to play ME1 first, but not required.
