And I want to kind of halfway understand it so I can help him enjoy it.
I'm hungry and how do I make food?
How do we make a house or something?

everything you need can be found on the minecraft wiki... if you really need it though there are some decent books out to help you learn.

I looked at one the other day.
That would be a cool companion gift to give a kid!

Watch the Achievement Hunter/Rooster Teeth Minecraft Let's Play episodes. Informative and pretty funny. Then you can learn to hate Gavin for having Meg Turney as a girlfriend like me.

On YouTube search for paulsoarejr. He has a insanely good tutorial on how to do things in the game.

Another question? Where do you get the different skins...and how do you install them.

PC or console?
Player skins or retextures for the whole game?
For PC and player skins, you go to the minecraft website and go into your account. There it has an option to upload a player skin image file and that will change you into that skin. You can find the files all over the net.
For entire game textures on PC, you find the pack you want and put the zip file in your resource pack folder in the minecraft directory. I believe it's in appdata by default. Then you start up minecraft and go into options -> resource packs and change it.

They are so many skins on Google it's absolutely insane. If you feel creative you can watch videos on YouTube to make your own. I will give you some ypopular sites to get skins. If you have to go on YouTube and watch how to upload a skin on minecraft.

I use Walter from breaking bad.
Now if you like the default look of the game don't worry about this. If you want to change the look of the game you can download resource packs (texture packs). Minecraft by default uses a texture resolution of 16x16 pixels. The higher the resolution the more demanding it becomes. If you need a visual look YouTube has thousands of videos showing texture packs and how to install them.

Yes. I personally use faithful texture pack. I like the default look just at a higher resolution.
