Hey guys, posted on the raspberry pi thread but it's been dead for a while so thought I'd ask in a new one

Here's my issue. Any help is appreciated

Hey guys. Got my cable to do rca and it works great. Cuts down on delay too

One thing though. I did an update on the RP3 and now my NES roms won't load.

They show up in retro pie and I click on them and it the game title shows up but then the screen flashes and it goes black. Every other system works fine

I tried reinstalling them and same thing.

Ever heard of this?

Does it flash up an error message of any kind before it exits back? It could be flashing so quickly it might be hard to notice but see if you can by launching the games over and over and letting it exit out while looking for any kind of indication of what's going on.

It might be trying to output the NES games in a resolution your TV doesn't understand. You could also test this by hooking it back up to your newer TV, via HDMI, just to see what happens. Regardless, I would play with resolution settings. After you select a game in EmulationStation you have a few brief moments to hit a button on your controller to launch additional options. There are settings in there for output resolution. Try lowering and raising the resolution to see what results you get.

If that's a dead end, try a different emulator. In that same menu, the first option in the list lets you change your emulator for that system. See if that makes a difference.

ETA: Here is a thread that might be worth reading through.

Thanks

No error message. What's the optimal resolution?

Also, did you put any shaders on the NES games? That could have done it as well with the RCA connection

The resolution that will work on your TV with a look and performance you are happy with. There really isn't an "optimal" one. Seriously, it depends on what you want. I think I run most of my systems at 1080 x 720 but that's the resolution that looks good on my TV and runs well with the shader I'm using. I'm also running it on a 60 inch HD TV, which sounds newer than the TV you're attempting to use. I wouldn't base your resolution off of mine.

I did turn shader on. Should I turn it off?

Does it do much?

Had the games been working after you turned the shader on but before the update?

It might. Just more of a stab in the dark to see if that may have been a cause. Doubt it but you never know

I would turn shaders off for now while troubleshooting this problem. You want to eliminate as many variables as possible and then, if you get it working again, slowly re-introduce any customizations you want.

Yes, but it depends on how you want the graphics to look. As mentioned, I'm running my Pi on a large, LCD HD TV. Retro games look awful on them and not at all how the original game developers intended. So, the shader I'm using has a slight glow effect, a light scanline, and it smooths out the pixels a bit too without looking blurry.

If you are running your Pi on a standard definition TV, you may not need any shaders at all. It really depends on how you want your games to look. I want my games to look as close to what they looked like at release without running them on an actual CRT.

What about the other suggestions? Changing the emulator used or changing the resolution?

Ok just reading up on how to install other emulators

This blows my mind. Lol

When I see the list I see 4/5 different emulators for snes and others. What's the difference? Isn't emulation station enough?

Which emulator should I try for nes?

Update. Used a keyboard and was able to enter the blue screen after clicking on a nes game

I changed emulators and it worked. That's awesome

So is that why some controls are backwards for some systems? Is it based on the emulator?

I've never seen this problem before. What systems are backwards? What games? Can you give examples of what buttons do what for a particular game?

Every libretro-based emulator, which is likely what you're using for every system, essentially uses the same button mapping. Nothing should be reversed.

Ok cool

When I first used it. The nes and snes were backwards

For nes on Mario the a and b were switched
