Both the PS4 and One feature a unified memory architecture, so in addition to the CPU and GPU sitting on the same die, they can share the same memory controller. Sony's decision to go with GDDR5 is great for the GPU, as GPU pipelines are typically quite long, and thus the GPU benefits from the added bandwidth. GDDR does, however, have a relatively higher latency than DDR, the latter of which is a more ideal choice for enhancing CPU performance.
To analogize this, GDDR would be akin to receiving chunks of data every few milliseconds, while DDR would be similar to receiving smaller segments of data every nanosecond.
