How do you approach a game you revisit after a long break?

Like you got to a point and either got too frustrated to continue or quit for other reasons. Do you usually continue from that same spot or do you start over?

I rented The Last of Us on redbox last night after I guess a year from playing it last, and I was at the part where Joel falls down that elevator shaft and has to swim around in the lower areas of the hotel. Not only am I having issues remember how the controls work (why don't games automatically include a button layout in options?), but I have completely forgotten how to approach the different infected. Which ones go by sight/sound. I failed quite a few times after starting up a generator to get power to a door, and I sat there thinking "either I start over or just quit playing this game altogether".

I know some games are easy enough to pick up, but a lot of times it's not just the gameplay, it's the story. Knowing why you are where you are and why you're on that particular quest.

We found out in the "old games" thread that some of you have unlimited gaming time, but it's a daunting thought for me to start over a game like TLoU when I don't have that much time to game anymore anyways.

If you can get past the generator part it will slow down again to figure out the controls.

I started to wonder if it was a room that I didn't need to fight everything. But then I thought I'd watch some Breaking Bad.

Start the generator and run like hell. You have to find the key card before you start the generator though. It may take you a couple of tries but you will get it.

I had the keycard. So I can run up that concrete ramp and avoid them altogether?

I figured since that generator made all that noise they were pretty much clued in on my position.

Yes start it and run to the access door. Enemies seem to spawn randomly so sometimes you get outnumbered and sometimes you won't see anyone. To add suspense the key card doesn't work right away so it freaked me out every time.

If I remember correctly, there will be a clicker or spore monster in the hallway of the access door nearly always. Have the shotgun equipped and a couple molotovs/bombs ready. I usually run up the ramp, turn around and throw a molotov in the doorway to torch anything coming up behind me. Do the same for the door of the laundry room to the right. Equip a bomb in case the spore monster is around the corner. If he is then stun him with the bomb or take him out with two.

Nope. I either finish from where I'm at or just give it up

I normally have to start over. It just depends how long I've been away from the game.

Just started Dragon's Dogma again after a long break.

I've been playing Red Dead Redemption again. Started over. I'm about 5 missions deep into Mexico.

I'd have to borrow the game from someone if I were to start over. Also, there are some parts that I've already played through that I honestly don't want to mess with again

Assuming you mean revisiting during the first play through, there is no way I would start over.

This is a problem sometimes because I like to play on the hardest difficulty and that makes trying to re-learn everything a challenege.

I am pretty sure I have stopped playing again for a second time because of the difficulty and not being able to re-learn.

First one, yeah. I can't remember which game, but there was one I had to start over on simply because I had no idea who anyone was and what was going on.

I find on games I do that with...usually games like Zelda/Dragon Age/Skyrim etc where I'll play for a week or so and then set it to the side for 6 months I end up having to restart because I can't figure out wtf I was supposed to be doing and so I'll wander around for a bit and if I can't figure it out I'll just start over. It's probably why I never beat games like that

It really depends. If I ever get back into demons souls I'll probably just start over.

Yeah if it is too hard after a long break, I will usually just quit. This also usually means for me, that the game wasn't blowing my socks off in the first place.

I thought about starting over on Bio:Infinite.

Then I remembered I really fricking hate that game. I wish I could finish it.

I'm very slowly doing my second playthrough on it, trying to pick up on clues about the ending, seeing what I missed. I wish I could push through the first one finally, but Infinite was able to hold my attention a lot better than 1.
