If you have plenty of ram it would come down to the processor or the video card right? I was thinking of upgrading my graphics card (a geforce gt440 1gb) but I only have a 2.66ghz xeon quad core processor. Also 8gb ram, ssd hd, etc. It plays the latest games just fine (I think I was running Crysis 3 on medium setting, but with either low or no AA) but I wanted to upgrade nonetheless. I know my rig can handle a pretty serious graphics card (750W p. supply, etc) but how do you figure out if additional GPU performance will be effectively utilized?

Games now days are mostly gpu driven so that should be your first upgrade.

Yeah its time to upgrade that gpu.

Treat yourself to a nice one and revel in the glory.

Everything else looks fine honestly. Slap your fav game on your ssd and get a new gpu and you will be in gaming heaven

I've got a 670 that I might be getting rid of in the next week when my 7970 comes in.

so even if all 4 cpu cores operate around 100% when I'm running a game, a better GPU will still be completely utilized? Is the way it works basically that the CPU just hands off the processing workload that it can't or isn't intended to handle to the GPU?

ok, thanks. i was worried that i would find that i needed to get a new cpu, and a new mobo to go with it. so I'd basically have to build a new computer if i wanted to upgrade my graphics card.

For that budget I'd recommend taking a look at Radeon 7870 "xt" or "Tahiti le" editions.

if your motherboard can support another 8gb of system ram I'd consider that too, for $50. altho 8gb is sufficient...just that could be your next upgrade down the line.

Might be interested, price? Can you combine a 670 with a 570 for SLI, or would that not work? I've got a superclocked 570 that handled everything I throw at it, Far Cry 3 on ultra, Crysis 3 the same, etc. But I'm always looking for a deal. Still need to grab an SSD.

eta: I wasn't paying attention to my original link. If you can find the 7878 myst or xt edition those will be the best for under $250. If not you can get the 7870 ghz edition.

Heya Blue, what are you selling? I've been considering going with a SSD just not looking forward to the downtime.

like blue said it has to be same model in same series. can be different manufacturers and different amounts of vram, but the card with higher vram will default to the vram of the other card. I am looking for around 300 for the 670.

i dont think so. the powercooler tahiti models have a core clock of 925mhz and a 6 Gbps memory clock.

the one you linked had a 1000 mhz core clock and 4.8 Gbps memory clock, so i think thats a GHZ edition.
