Surprised it hasn't been talked about any since this was announced on Tuesday, anyways here's an article about it. I've never used Think Geek, but this deal seems insane to me - is this the next move for GameStop? Are we going to see them as kinda the "Hot Topic" of video games?

I know originally Hot Topic wanted this deal:

GameStop Buys Think Geek

quote:

Video game retailer GameStop announced on Tuesday that it has acquired Geeknet, the parent company of tech-focused online retailer Think Geek. GameStop will acquire all of Geeknet's outstanding stock (yes, they are a publicly traded company) for $20 per share, meaning the deal is worth an estimated $140 million.

Geeknet was previously in merger discussions with Hot Topic, but those talks have been terminated.

quote:

Geeknet's CEO Kathryn McCarthy said, "As a part of GameStop's family of brands, Geeknet will be well-positioned to achieve our goals of increasing our brand awareness and expanding our product offerings."

Seems like a strange move by Gamestop.

Is this better or worse than becoming a national chain of technology-based pawn shops?

In 10 years GameStop won't be a thing because everything will be digital whether people like it or not.

Yea, hence their pivot to buying and selling used goods. Also I imagine they'll figure out a way to strike GameStop exclusives to keep some content going exclusively through them.

Eventually people are going to realize that exclusive content is useless 99% of the time right?

That and preordering games fricks up the content more often than not. I wish everyone would stop doing that asap.

As long as AAA titles are offering it, people, no matter how anti-preorder they are, will continue to buy it. People can say they're never going to pre-order games but there's always a game or two every year that they will because they want everything they can possibly get

They could still be a major player if they innovate over that time period

Parenting doesn't help but work has been crazy. The worst is behind me now though so I should be playing again soon.

I'm guessing what he means is that when a game gets a high quantity of pre-orders the developers begin to show less drive in creating more content. It's all about persuading people to buy what you have created not about creating something great.

Not saying every developer works in this way but I'd be sure in saying some do.
