Unless Square Enix has agreed to an HD remake of Final Fantasy VII exclusively on a Nintendo console, I don't understand how they allowed Cloud onto Smash Bros. You'd think Snake, Shovel Knight, Rayman, Simon Belmont, Banjo-Kazooie, Shantai, and Bomberman would all have dibs over him as third party characters. Might as well announce Master Chief as a Smash fighter if they're allowing Cloud in. Really they could get any character in that game that they wanted to since it's free incredible advertising, but I never thought I'd see the day where Cloud was in Smash Bros.

Here's what's also funny about Cloud's inclusion: Playstation All Stars' was kind of counting on him. He was Playstation's most iconic great character since all but him really went belly-up eventually, but Square Enix refused to put in that crappy game. This has to be a huge "frick You" to Sony.

Kind of cool, but emo Cloud who never appeared on the system?

Why not someone like Kain, Sabin, Terra, or Rydia?

Or if they got really crazy FuSoYa. We need old dudes in SSB.

But still cool. I like Ryu quite a bit.

There's got to be some deal behind the scenes. I don't get why they went with Cloud either besides the cool factor. I don't think anyone ever saw him as an option anymore than Master Chief.

Why not Sabin

Because they would lose a lot of business from the Louisiana region.

One of my favorite FF6 characters. And perfect for a fighting game.

Why exactly? Ryu didn't result in anything. Snake didn't result in anything. Cloud is a iconic character and I'm sure Nintendo did everything they could to get him in the game.

I am with you. This is nothing but them putting a highly popular character into a highly popular game. It is a win/win/win for all parties.

Square wins for free advertisement for upcoming FF7 remake and whatever they got for allowing it.

Nintendo wins for sales of DLC.

Sony wins for getting free advertisement for FF7 remake.

Ryu is still in Nintendo games and Snake started here. The thing is FFVII was Nintendo's biggest missed opportunity ever as far as a single game is concerned. If Cloud can get in Smash, now everyone is on the table. Master Chief, Crash Bandicoot, Kratos, Sly Cooper, etc are now all true possibilities for the next Smash. They've truly opened the floodgates for anyone.

I totally agree with you. Everyone on Reddit was saying the same thing as this board. "This confirms a Final Fantasy game must be coming to the Wii U or NX!"

Why?? Nintendo just wants as many iconic video game characters embedded in gaming culture as possible in their game to grow its audience. And the company "lending" their character to Smash gets free advertising for their IP. It's win-win for both parties and a good move for Square Enix given their recently announced FF VII HD remake.

And the reason they didn't pick some other FF character more complimentary to a fighting game is because only FF fans know who those characters are. Almost everyone familiar with video games knows who Cloud is, even if they never played FF VII or ANY FF game for that matter.

This is dumb. Square Enix is not console exclusive. They are 3rd party. Master Chief/Microsoft is/are not. This would be more like including a character from an EA title. "Oh shite, Madden QB is a playable character in Smash, now they might as well get the protagonist from Gears of War!"

The logic doesn't really follow.

OK, if Nintendo came up to Microsoft last year and said "In order to promote Halo 5, we're going to have Master Chief as a DLC." do you think they would have refused them? Of course not. Really, Cloud not being on the N64 is the biggest insult it has been dealt by a third party. I would say Cloud is the single touchiest character (along with Sephiroth) when it comes to Nintendo's history. They're remaking Final Fantasy VII, so it wouldn't shock me if they'll make it a launch title for the Nintendo NX and that's why Cloud is going to be DLC. It's really the only thing that makes sense.

Nintendo wouldn't make that move, IMO, so it's a pointless thought experiment.

Kinda irrelevant when Metal Gear Solid is what has popularized the character.

and honestly, I think you're underestimate Nintendo's pride. No way they'd want Sony or MS IPs in Smash.

SF4 was on 3DS.

That's kind of my point with Cloud. As far as games that didn't make their system and hurt their pride, Final Fantasy VII has to be at the very top.
