Just watched a video about the Super Console X2 and it got me thinking about buying something like it.

Any recommendations for one of these retro consoles?

I don't want to get into the downloading emulators and stuff. Just something plug and play.

I don't have any experience with any all in one emu boxes because I usually just use my pc, but I have thought about getting something like this to put in a spare bedroom in case we ever have someone over. Looked into the box you posted and it sounds exactly like a retropie. Retropie uses raspberry pie boards and the X2 you mentioned uses an amlogic s905X2. Both of those are ARM SoCs. Retropie uses Retroarch which is a basically a collection of emulators. The X2 sounds like it uses a combination of emulation station (another collection of emulators) and retroarch.

If you are wanting a box that comes preinstalled with the emulators and games then X2 or a retropie off of ebay/etsy will work for you. Sounds like the the X2 might be the better option though because it comes with the two controllers. Here is a good review of it. Just remember that there will probably be games from the 5th and 6th generation that will not run well.

Steam Deck is overkill for what they want to do.

I bought the X2 based on the ETA Prime video. Comes in tomorrow but probably wont get to mess with it until the weekend. I'll come back early next week and post my review of it.

I built a few raspberry pi 3 consoles using Retropie 5-6 years ago. I ended up giving them to friends a while back as I moved everything to one of my older laptops. I now have a Launchbox/Big Box setup with about 5000 games. But for some reason I have been itching to get back to a emulation console on a TV.

If this thing turns out to be a giant piece of shite, at least I'll be able to pull tens of thousands of games off of it that I currently dont have and throw them on my Launchbox setup. That's my justification for buying it

Xbox series S emulates well through Retroarch. There are a few videos online on how to do it. If you have the console, it’s $20 developer fee. You’ll need the console, external drive, and a computer running windows 10 or newer to configure the safety settings of that drive.

I recently got a switch with Nintendo online and play a lot of retro games on it. I prefer playing on switch. The libraries are limited, but it’s still a bunch of games.

Fooled with it for about 10 minutes last night. It is defintiely plug & play. Hook up power supply, hdmi, plug in sd card and blue tooth dongle and start playing. Went through the menus. Just under 108,000 games but obviously a ton of duplicates.

Controller has an on/off swith on it initially set to off. It is kind of hidden, but moving it to "on" immediately got it working without any other steps needed to pair with the dongle.

Controllers are shitty. They feel cheap. Button presses dont feel good. I will defintiely change these out. Luckily, as a gamer, I already have unused PS3 & PS4 controllers. If you buy this, dont be surpised if you end up changing the controllers out.

Also had some weird delays when pressing buttons. It wasn't input lag as it would work fine for a minute or two then become unresponsive for 10 seconds at a time. I assume it is bluetooth connection to the dongle not being strong enough. Only tried one controller, so maybe the other is fine. Or maybe I have interference where I placed it (inside a wooden entertainment center). I'll figure that out when I spend more time with it this weekend.

TL;DR - Console seems fine. Controllers are cheap. Possible bluetooth connection issues with the only controller that I tried but that could be my fault.

I'll update actual game experience over the weekend but dont think there will be an issue there.

I ended up ordering and got it yesterday. You were right, the controllers are atrocious but they will at least get the job done until I get something new. I did not mess with it until today and it seems good except for a few things.

First thing I did was update the software and because of that, so far with my initial testing I cannot play any dreamcast or n64 games. It looks like anything using retroarch gives me a bios screen when I try to run it (error message is saying that I am missing 3 files). I plugged the sd into my pc and ran retroarch on steam and the dreamcast games work so I'm guessing retroarch itself on the sd is screwed up after the update.

Also not liking the dreamcast game selection. Dreamcast was one of the main reasons I got this and there are very few selections for the system. I know that I can go out and download copies of games from multiple sites, but this is supposed to be plug and play, and some of the dreamcast games are hard to come by when it comes to working for retroarch (which Super Console X2 uses in its emulation). One of my favorite Dreamcast games, Armada, was not on the list. I tried multiple approaches to different copies that I downloaded from a lot of sites and could not get a working version of it after converting to .chd file format.

All in all, I think it has potential as a plug and play though. I really wish that I had not updated it because I think that that was my issue with n64 and dreamcast games. I got it for a little over $100 on amazon with a chrome extension and the collection of roms and modded roms almost makes it worth that alone due to the time it would take to download and sort all of them. So I guess I will try to fix the file system over the weekend.
