re: Anyone picking up The Witness tomorrow?

I want it... and considering my online games are completely f*cked right now (see my thread) - I might get it just to take the anger off my mind.
But I haven't gotten too far in The Talos Principle yet and that is giving me fits. No idea how the difficulty of this game is compared to that.

Sounds like The Talos Principle, which I enjoy but often get stuck. The joy with Talos Principle is I can come back to the puzzles I was stumped on maybe a month later and all of a sudden I have this cathartic moment and I solve it. Very strange...

I wandered into an area that seemed to serve no purpose, but it was graphically distinct from everything around it, so that didn't seem right. Then I discovered something that sort of blew my mind and now I'm looking at the game in a totally different way.
I don't think that is a spoiler but.....
....I'm thinking I know what you are talking about. The "graphical distinctness" made me realize that there are more than just small puzzles that you solve.
Or we might be talking about completely different things.

Maybe we can do a spoiler thread once we've gotten to a point when we've basically beaten the game but are ready to receive help on the puzzles that still remain.
Or we might be talking about completely different things.

I was very lukewarm about this game but Giant Bomb's Quick Look sold me. I've played it for about 15 hours now and still discovering new things. This is a very meditative game to just walk around and discover hidden things that may unlock later.
However, does anyone else get creeped out by this game? I keep seeing faces, figures and silhouettes in objects that startle me. Not sure if that's going to directly tie into the story later or not.

Last night I completed the sound based puzzles, which I enjoyed (Myst had a very similar puzzle) but felt could have been a little better designed. There's an element to them that's just a little frustrating and unnecessary, imo.
I am stuck on the second to last one of those. It seems there's 5 notes, but only 4 options with one of those being the double node. Not sure if that makes sense...

I took what I learned from that experience and returned to a few areas then made my way over by the orange trees and unlocked a path to what looks like a quarry.
I know what you're talking about (+1) and it blew my mind too. I am currently at +13 and found a few more that I can see the pattern but don't know how to unlock it yet.

I didn't get to play as much as I wanted this weekend but I made a little progress. Finished the puzzles near the "fall" wooded area and near the quarry. I actually really enjoyed these, though I had to use some graph paper to help me visualize the solutions for a few.
Now I'm actually inside the quarry solving the puzzles with the little symbol that looks like a flux capacitor. The first set makes sense to me, but the second set...I just don't know. I've solved the entire string but I'm still not convinced I've got the whole concept down that it's trying to convey. I mostly completed them through trial and error and attempts at recognizing a pattern. I THINK I know how they work, but I just wish there were more puzzles of this type in the area for me to practice on.

In that area, those practice puzzles are up on a pedestal and your on ground level. How do you get up there?

quote:If we're talking about the same thing, the first set of practice panels are elevated and there is a monitor "panel" on the ground level that you must solve. Correctly solving that will create a ramp that allows you to access the remaining string of panels.

(The general rule I've noticed is if the puzzle is on an old CRT-style monitor, it activates machinery of some kind when solved.)
Furthermore, there is a second set of panels on a catwalk on the ocean side of the building. After you've solved the first set of panels, another monitor "panel" should power up. You need to solve that one to activate a lift and how to use that correctly is a small puzzle in of itself. The first tip I'll offer is to just remember that you can solve a puzzle from pretty far away. You don't have to be standing right next to it.
If you need more of a hint than that, let me know and I'll see if I can help. The second set of panels on the catwalk are the ones that I don't entirely understand, though I've solved all of them.

I never finished the music puzzels. I eventually gave up but will return to it later. What's your hint? I thought maybe the big note was a combination of the high & low note equaling it out to a middle note.
That's where I'm at too and feel the same way. So maybe it's supposed to make you feel like that?

I didn't play as much as I wanted this weekend either. I didn't play at all actually.
The graph paper is a great idea .
I left off in the castle on the the 4th maze. The first was kinda obvious, the 2nd was less obvious and the 3rd I got lucky on because I very easily could have never figured it out. The 4th I have no idea and am really frustrated.
I also finished the temple, which was pretty straight forward once you figure out the key.

quote:Sure, I'll give you 2 hints. Hopefully they help.
What's your hint? I thought maybe the big note was a combination of the high & low note equaling it out to a middle note.
1. The sound you are supposed to be matching against changes for the last 2 puzzles, though you may not realize that. In that last puzzle, you aren't trying to match the bird you've been following for most of the puzzles. You're supposed to be matching the other bird.
2. The big note should match up with a note that is sustained for longer. It's not a double, repeated note, which is what I initially thought. I think once you listen to the "other bird" you'll be able to hear the sustained note and then build the rest of the notes around it to solve the puzzle. Sketching it out on paper while listening helped me a lot here.
If you still can't get it, it might be worth simply looking the solution up. Of all the puzzles I've come across so far, this one feels the most ambiguous because of how subtle the pitch changes are, especially to someone like me with hardly any musical background.
There are also more sound puzzles in that jungle area after you solve the one (I think) you're stuck on. The last set was much easier for me than the first, but finding them are a little tricky.
quote:Maybe so? The puzzle I left off of combines both types of puzzles with that symbol, but I haven't given it a real try yet. Maybe I learned more than I thought? We'll see.

That's the area. I guess I didn't solve it correctly? I think I did because the next panel is activated. I don't know.

quote:You can technically "solve" the CRT panel that's on the ground level (where you are) 2 different ways. One way lowers the ramp and the other way raises the ramp. How you raise and lower it are pretty intuitive once you look at the puzzle again.

And I think the panel up on the pedestal is active to communicate to you that you are supposed to be getting up there. Hope that helps.

Those hints definitely helped me to solve the last two puzzles

I beat all of the quarry puzzles last night and I think I know what the flux capacitor-looking symbol means now. I ended up re-solving all the puzzles I had already completed in that area just to be sure. Completing the quarry opened up one half of yet another laser puzzle, but the other half is locked by several puzzles in a nearby boathouse, which I'm stumped on. In fact, I can't even figure out how to get up to them. I'll have to come back later.
Also, in the quarry I came across another one of those big gray puzzles, the kind that combines elements from other puzzles with multiple starting points. You encounter one of them near the beginning of the game on a door but lack the knowledge to solve it then. Anyway, I completed the quarry one and nothing seemed to happen, so I went back to that first one near the starting area and the door it was on was open! But why?? I guess completing the quarry puzzle unlocked this door in a totally different area of the island? I went ahead and completed the puzzle on that door, despite the door already being open. I'm hoping it opened a door somewhere else that I haven't found yet. We'll see.
After that, I headed to the desert temple and made significant progress. I believe I'm on the last 2 or 3 panels of that area. It's funny because the first time I visited this place I didn't have a clue on what to do. But this second time, I immediately picked up on how the puzzles worked.

Put 3 hours into the game starting last night and today. Beat the initial part and the desert area with the house..boat house? Anyways, I finished the apple orchard, maybe? I got to the area where you see the sliced apple on the plate and then you can't progress.
Is the windmill part of the Apple puzzle? Does every set lead to a beaming light going to the mountain? I've gotten one light to the mountain from the boat house ones, but even still there were some puzzles on the lower part that I couldn't activate ???
