Talk about a fricking time eater. Interesting concept. Nothing like a game with almost no guidance/instruction and you have to just figure it out.

I actually made the correct choice at the end of the game. What happened if you didn't?

I spent a lot of time in that game. What was the choice? I don't remember.

I love all of those games (minus 5, I guess), but I hated how stupid they made me feel. I got through Riven and 3 without minor headaches, but 4 was just a nightmare. Love the environments and music, but these games require a LOT of note taking.

ETA That being said, I'd buy 4 in a heartbeat if ever offered on Steam. Right now, it's only the first one remastered, Riven, and 5.

I remember getting Riven and not playing it much. It was a game that my brother and I played together and when Riven came out we just never got together again to play.

How was the remastered first one? I remember playing the old one with my grandfather but I was young and too dumb to figure out the puzzles. Just curious if the remastered is a click and move like the original.

I played Myst with my brother too. We would sit there for hours trying to figure all of it out. We never got to the end, but did make it pretty far.

Yes!

When I used to go into office depot as a young lad, the guys that worked in the computer section were running Myst.

Every time they were stuck, they'd let customers play because they realized a fresh set of eyes could spot things.

And what's funny is -- and this is going off of something Freauxzen brought up a while back -- this is a hardcore game, but gamers today wouldn't consider it one.

The choice was to whom did you give the last page.

i think theres an ending where you swap places with the guy in the book, where he gets set free and you are trapped.

something like that. its been ages since ive thought about it. i even read a couple of the novelizations.

Played this damn game when I was 7 with my little cousin (he was 4) practically every weekend. I hated that damn game. Fiendishly impossible for kids that age. We had no idea what we were doing or what we were supposed to do.

Good times

The first game I got for my brand new Gateway 2000, original Pentium 60 MHz PC in 1993. I loved that game.

If you gave the last page to either brother they essentially swapped places with you, trapping you where they were. Then they slowly rip the pages away while laughing maniacally until you can only see static.

And if you're looking for a modern game clearly inspired by Myst, you should keep an eye out for "The Witness" which is being released early next year for PC and PS4.

I didn't play Myst until I was in college. I always heard from other kids in the 90's that it was impossible for them to figure out but using my 19 year old brain I beat it in around 6 hours or so.

Riven though was another story. I was stuck for a couple days trying to figure out the geothermal power plant thing with the rocks or marbles or whatever it was.

King's Quest was fun but a bit absurdly punishing at times. I think it was in 5 where you take the boat to an island or something and there's no indication which way is a good way or a bad way to go that I know of. But the bad way leads to getting eaten by a sea monster.

Or the games always being dead ends if you didn't bring an item to an area without giving any logical indication that the item would be necessary, or any logical indication of where or how to get the item, etc. 6 did that several times like with the Hole item for the minotaur cave and numerous items for the castle at the end, and to a lesser extent the druid island I guess.
