Any old Everquest players on here? Do you miss it?

This was the first MMO game i played. Man was it awesome back when it first came out and then all the expansions came out. I guess i wasnt the only one as a few years ago i discovered some people created EQ Emulators.
IF you ever want to relive those moments look up
"Project 1999". Theres about 1300 online at peak times, and its awesome seeing the EC tunnel packed again.

Played it very little, but I do remember some Ultima Online.

Played it a bit and UO. But I went large in Asheron's Call. Loved that game. Darktide for the win.

I played original EQ back in 2003-2005 so not exactly classic EQ. It was still very different than anything out there today.
I do miss EverQuest, but a lot of the nostalgia is due to the novelty of online gaming back in the early 2000s. With message boards, Facebook, and WoW being so huge, exploring some virtual world with people from all over the globe just isn't as special anymore.

I'm pretty sure there's a few of us that have played/play on p1999. Me and someone else were actually in Taken together at some point (without realizing we were both on TD too) before they turned in to the zerg that they are now.
*ETA* I haven't played on p99 since December or so...and that was actually on Red. I get too out of control when I play EQ and it takes over my life...it's an all or nothing game for me, so I'm currently choosing the no EQ route

The one thing that game had was a good community that I have never found anywhere else, if you got a bad rep you might as well quit or start over with a new toon or on a new server. That game was about grouping/co-operation and hanging with friends.

it's why I play new MMO's for all of 2 months and quit. Too easy to get to max level, instant queue's across servers making playing with the same people regularly easy to avoid since you hit a button and bam there's a group. No "camping" where you have nothing to when waiting for a pull/repops to do but be sociable, and finally everything now is a race to see who can hit the most buttons as fast as possible. There's no time to talk while you're waiting 10 seconds for backstab to refresh or complete heal to land etc.
The social aspect of EQ is why it will always be the best game I ever played. I still have people I communicate with that I played that game with 15 years ago. I can't say the same for newer MMO's.

I beta'd EQ and played it til a little after Gates of Discord. I floundered around with The Realms, CoX and Anarchy Online til EQ2 came along.
EQ was lightning in a bottle. It was the combination of the first big sandbox MMO in the US along with a smaller, more serious but less transient customer base combined with a game that required larger time investments as you went along. It was a brand new experience for almost everyone (my first day in Beta I died due to falling off of one of the tree platforms in Kelethin ). While there were already a few 3D games out there (hello, Meridian 59) none had the scope of EverQuest.
I can still remember being in Beta and a guildie (he seemed soooooo much more powerful since he was a level 12 druid) helped guide my wee level 8 bard's arse from Qeynos to Freeport so I could be bound there and adventure with the rest of the guild. Running along the wall in West Commonlands he stopped and told me to look out to the left. I did and was speechless as I saw my first hill giant. It was like being a kid and having Christmas, my birthday and new Saturday morning cartoons all at the same time.
The timing, the newness and the community are what made it what it was. I've gone back and tinkered a bit over the years (still haven't gotten my bard beyond 65, which was the current max when I stopped playing) but it's just not the same (even with the smoothed out leveling).

There's too much bloat in the game. Most of the most nostalgic zones are irrelevant now, and the new leveling path (single starting zone linear progression) is pretty boring.
Also when you start to reacher a high lvl, vendors no longer sold your spells. You have to loot them or craft them. This was fine when lvl 65 was the max lvl, but now that Mac lvl is 100, mid to max level becomes very tedious. Also, most veterans are now setting at thousands of AA points.
Simply too much effort t catch up to the vets is slowly killing the game.

It's not the vets, it's the lack of new player influx. The vets are keeping the doors open and they need to advance and see new content. A new player today would have no chance at learning the game, hell I can't even figure out a lot of the new stuff, progression flags for zones to get higher version of spells, power sources, etc., when I play I usually take a toon from 0 to about 70 in the older world zones and try to do some favorite stuff and see a little that I haven't seen before.

I mean that's what I said. There's too little effort smoothing out progression for New players. Nerfing the leveling curve only goes so far, and letting you buy premade Lvl 80 characters from the cash shop is not the answer

Miss read your post, my bad. When I go back I know there are a couple of zones I used to level in and I can't even remember how to get back to them the game is so huge. Tower of Frozen Shadow is still one of my favorites in the game.

Old school EQ was one of only two games that immersed me so much that I could sit down to play for a little while at 7 pm and the next time I looked at the clock it was 2 am.
It all started to fall apart with Shadows of Luclin, when the game started divide the fanbase into haves and have nots.

I actually enjoyed Everquest Adventures for the PS2. My first step into an MMO. I did not play on PC until SWG.

EQ was the one game where I could sit waiting for a damn goblin to spawn for some beads for hours and hours while not even getting completely bored.
I'm not really sure I miss the gameplay compared to what there is today, but I certainly miss the experience.

The thing with EQ that you will never get in any new MMO was it was so damn hard. It was terrifying to die, and it was terrifying to go get your body if you did. That made everything you did feel so much more rewarding.
Plus the answers to everything hadn't made it all over the Internet yet so there was a real sense of adventure and having to rely on the community.

I remember having a leveling group in Crystal Caverns (geos). I was a DE Cleric. Obviously I was the main, and only, heal. We were all on Ventrillo and I was drinking heavily. The next morning I woke up and logged on. Apparently I got so drunk I forgot to heal and everyone died.
They were all pissed at me for a couple days. I have never found a community like that in any game since. I was genuinely upset that I let them all down.
EQ was the greatest MMO in history. Depth, difficulty, community, hacker prevention, etc.
