OK got the game.

A few things I hope won't be an issue. My wife is not a fan of vent, so I can only use it on the rare occasion when she is out of town.

I am a weird combo of causal gamer (often my playing time is only 30ish minutes a night; Wednesdays being an exception) but I LOVE PvP.

I downloaded and starting it yesterday (on dragonbrand server). Level 4 Necro Human named: Dragonsturm
Clueless about crafting. Is there a good how too guide?

Really in the "just trying to figure things out" phase right now.

i can help with crafting.. what are your professions?

For me and weaponsmithing.. it goes something like

1) acquire copper, either thru Trading Post (auction house) or Mining
2) acquire "blue" drops, like tiny totem, tiny fang, stuff like that
3) go to weaponsmithing table
4) craft bronze ignots
5) craft wood planks from wood acquired
6) create "inscriptions" at crafting table
7) go to discovery tab, combine top half of weapon, bottom half of weapon, and an inscription. This discovers a new recipe, and gives lot of XP
8) rinse and repeat until every crafting milestone #.. 25, 50, 75, etc
9) determine new materials needed, begin crafting your higher level stuff

when it comes to crafting, the best way to gain experience and crafting skill is to use the discovery tab. Basically everything has a couple of things that make up the base of a hand made item, those will all be given to you as you progress. Eventually you can supplement combining the basic materials with materials that you've found on the AH or out exploring.

for example...my jeweler: to make a ring requires a band + a setting. That will give you the components to make a basic ring. Now once on the discovery tab I can drop that band and setting in to my window and then add a 3rd item to give it extra stats based on the jewel. So I combine band + setting + jewel.

Once you've discovered something it will show up in your main crafting tab as a recipe type deal.

That's kind of a quick and vague explanation of crafting, but I think it will help get you started easy enough.

Seems odd there's only one single Lightning combo field. Must make elementalists very desired.

Also the biggest thing I think people over look on crafting is the yellow patterns sold by the vendors. Each one takes 15 of the blue items to make (which cost some gold), but you can buy these and double your money by reselling the items....I do this every time I hit a cap so I can buy more materials for the next crafting levels. With 1 gold someone can easily max out crafting just by playing the TP and not wasting a minute farming.

On my next character I'm going to attempt to max out 2 crafting proffesions without leaving the city.

Buy them from the weaponsmith vendor...20s will make you a sword you can flip for 50. Do this a few times and you got the cash for the next 75 levels of crafting. I'll be at 400 weapon and armor using this method this weekend with an extra 20 gold in my bag

Also check the blue item prices before buying the patterns and keep in mind the stats each makes for resellability. A little research and you'll be hauling it in

Oh yeah...i always forget about that tab thanks

Back in my Wow days I had max enchanter and jewelcrafter...basically created cheap rings to d/e and bought every high level green under 7g I could.

made so much fricking gold on the auction house it was stupid...started giving away 5k flying mounts

My point being, if there's a way to exploit a free market for my gain, I'll find it. Your tip is right up my alley

Yeah my brother capped out a couple of accounts by controlling the jewel market for a long time he was the most hated person on the server since he had sole control over prices and supply. The ore farmers (aka gold sellers) loved him though. I'm pretty sure he has since retired but sold his stash through paypal making for some nice extra income.

yeah...buying out every single enchanting mat on the ah and then relisting them for 30% more. Everyday...morning noon and night. I was a bit obsessed

All done from a lvl 5 bank alt so fricks wouldn't bother me

Pages and pages of enchanting mats listed individually thanks auctioneer

Get yellow recipes from weaponsmith trainer

Buy mats from trading post

Craft new yellow

Re-sell, I guess on trading post, for a markup. Cover your expenses and turn a profit

Rinse and repeat.

I rolled an asura mesmer last night...mesmers are an odd class. Equipped a 2handed sword but needed to be 1200 range out to do real damage with it..hah

Pretty fun though.

I finally got the game myself but I been trying different type of characters including Engineer and Mesmer.

But i need some advice about this, which one is better? Engineer or Eles and what is a good PVE build for them?

That is it in a nut shell. This is highly subjective to change as the population gets more balanced from 0 to 80. The prices will eventually settle, but one benefit I had a week or so ago was that the market was completely flooded with crafting items since the TP was down so long. I sold some crafting lvl 375 stuff last night to craft some top end items for my self. With a good many people being maxed out now my profit margins on those sales (yellow items) was down to about 40-50%....Although profits have slowed it is still above 0 so it's a no-brainer to buy, craft, sell (Yellow or Orange Items only).

When the TP first became stable bags were selling for less than what the materials cost. Just do some research right before purchasing the materials and check the crafted item price before crafting it and you should be able to make some good $$.

Another tip for making easy cash, but you need a good nest egg, some free time, and be willing to take risks.

The way the TP is setup to allow buyers and sellers to set prices makes for a good opportunity to flip items if your careful. Eventually this will become more difficult to do, and you'll have to find people putting auctions up at stupid prices.

Example: Last night a seller put up 2000 ore for 17c a piece. The lowest seller price behind that was 22c a piece. When people want the items immediately they will buy at the seller price. I payed 3.4 gold for the entire lot and went back and sold it at 22c a piece. I netted 1 gold but after the transaction fees profited 82 silver.

The entire transaction from buy through the sale took maybe 10 minutes, mostly due to selling such a large quantity.

This can be done with small quantities also, but the bigger your bank roll becomes the more money you'll make. Once again you have to devote the time to research and may need to sift through many different items to find the easy profit.

from the little ive read, Engineers seem to thrive in a group setting more, with their turrets and such.

seems they get a flamethrower to?

Better is def a subjective term.. really depends on what class you have the most fun with in a solo environment or with a group

As far as builds, you will unlock your 1-5 weapon skills as you use the weapon, and 7-9 skills will be used to supplment.. once again, depending on if you want to group or solo, or both, unlock these 7-9 skills in the progession order you deem most useful.

mesmers seem like a more complex caster than necro or elementalist.. Might not be noob friendly

Mesmers create illusions of themselves via skills then these illusions can be detonated for dmg, confusion, stun effects

Elems use raw elemental dmg...fire for dmg, cold for utility/support, lightning for a unique combo field.

Honestly all the classes are fun
