Would anyone like to see the FDB Chopped Challenge return?

On a semi-regular basis (ie: not every month but every other, etc)?

And if so, what kind of revamps would you like to see?

(My idea was to only allow past competitors to nominate and vote on ingredients. But I am down for whatever)

Thoughts?

I'm also not opposed to letting someone else take over as Ted Allen if they think they can run it more efficiently and get more participation.

Yes.

First, make it less democratic in the way ingredients are chosen. It ends up being crazy amount of things to choose from with 30 different people voting. Maybe someone comes up with three ingredients, and a panel of three people choose the final ingredient. Or maybe that's not the best. All I know is it's a little overwhelming with people shouting out a whole bunch of stuff.

Secondly, most of us aren't René Redzepi and can't whip something up from crazy stuff. I like three common ingredients and maybe 1 not-so-common-but-still-not-off-the-wall ingredient. Something that pushes me, but also 4 ingredients that can be complimentary and cohesive in the final product.

challenges are dumb if others can't actually taste the results.

I prefer the threads like your reverse sear thread that inspire others to try something cool, provide education and tips, rather than try to create a feaux competition

Here's a thought: you don't have to read the thread.

take it easy pal. it is not a legit competition if the judges aren't allowed to taste it unless you are only judging on photography skills.

I like to think some of us are good enough to judge based on process and final appearance. Sure, we can't taste it and for all we know they added too much salt, but processes are pretty easy to critique and judge what the final product would probably taste like.

Its just for fun. Its not a real competition.

Really, I just like it to see what other people are cooking, and how. Its fun to see the ideas people come up with.

That's about it.

i hear what you are saying, but apply that to your homebrewing. you could list your grain bill, process etc and show a pic of a beer. the true tasts is in putting it to your lips. I just don't see why it should be something that people vote on unless you are voting on how well someone photographed it.

hey I'm also interested in that too...its why I read this board. I'm just not seeing how making it a competition at all ( and some people do take it seriously) is legitimate at all without being able to taste the final product.

I actually thought of that as I was making the argument, and you're right, but I can still have a pretty good idea of what I think it should taste like.

Creativity and plating is plenty enough reason to vote. We don't have to taste it. People watch Chopped. It's a very successful show and we can't taste the dishes. I love reading what people did and how they came up with the dishes they make.

They don't make money from the judges' tasting the food. They make money from the people who watch the show and the advertisers. I watch all the time. I can't taste the food, but I enjoy watching what the contestants create with the basket ingredients and what it looks like on the plate. Same as in the thread here. This is just a fun exercise. No one has to participate or read the thread if they don't choose to. It's not like we have a thread limit here and the thread takes up space.
