Pinot Grigio
Pinot Gris

Are these one and the same? Or are they different varietals?

Same grape. Gris is French and grigio is Italian.

Seconded.

You'll also see weird little regional rivalries pop up, like New Zealand and Australia choosing one name over the other.

Or Oregon. They call it Pinot Gris there but Grigio in CA.

Thanks, all, for solving my question. Same grape, two languages, random labeling by those who bottle and sell the product.

One other question. For those who drink this varietal, do you prefer it be called Gris or Grigio? Or does it matter to you?

Grigio because I lived in Italy for a few years.

Same, just like Grenache and Grenacha
Or Syrah and Shiraz.

They are genetically identical but have different processes dependent upon location.

Like that matters or has any impact on the wine.

I generally say Pinot Gris, but I don't really care either way.
