Got what appears to be a very nice wide-bottom decanter for christmas from my sister in law. She got the other sister the same.

I'm not a big wine drinker. My wife generally does not drink wine that isn't chilled. And really, the only chilled wines she drinks are things like white zin, blush wines, and wines with some bubble in them.

So what do I do with this thing? I understand it's mainly used for red wines. I'm willing to try it out if it means I might enjoy red wine more. How exactly does decanting work? Otherwise, I may well try to exchange it for barware I would actually use.

If you don't drink wine or host nice dinners where wine is served, exchange it for something you'll use.

It allows the wine to take in oxygen which can open up the flavors. If you don't drink a lot of wine or entertain people who do, it's not really worth it.

You just pour the wine into the decanter and let it sit for 20 minutes or so prior to serving.

There a lot of opinions about decanting. Basically decanting helps open up a wine or aerate it. It is used mostly for red wines. You pour the wine in, let it sit there a while (or not - again lots of viewpoints), and then pour into the glass.

I have a decanter and in last five years I have used it about 10 times, mostly for wines that are going to have a lot of sediment (which can stay in the bottle if you decant the wine) or the internet tells me to decant.

In sum, trade it for something you will use.

Thanks. I'm in my mid 30s with two kids and while we tend to host a fair number of parties, they are more of the cocktail variety as opposed to nice dinners, and our friends and family are more beer drinkers or liquor drinkers, then they are nice red wine drinkers.

I want to upgrade some of my barware, so may do that.
