You may have been attempting a joke, and obviously we don't have the sheer quantity to compete with NYC or Chicago, but Birmingham is actually an underrated food city. We have a couple world class chefs and a few world class restaurants to go along with them. And the scene just keeps growing and getting better every year.

If this was just about the South instead of the whole country then we'd deserve a mention.

Nikki's West was the Fire when I tried it. So was Sneaky Pete's and Golden Rule BBQ.

I'm not joking dude. I go to Birmingham twice a year because I have family that moved down there from Missouri. Saw's is tGOAT BBQ. I love the one in homewood because they have ribs. I also love post office pies for Pizza. I always order a swine pie when I visit there. Daves is solid for a Pizza option too. I know Birmingham better than you think.

Nikki's West is great for being in such a shite area, and we're an underrated BBQ town too (although Golden Rule wouldn't be my first or even second choice)

I was talking more along the lines of fine dining like Highlands Bar & Grill, Hot & Hot Fish Club, Ovenbird, Chez Fonfon

You bring up a good point though, we also have tons of great casual and hole in the wall places. Saws Soul Food, Melt, and Delta Blues Hot Tamales are some of my favorite along those lines.

On a per person basis New Orleans, Lafayette, many southern La. towns.

I love New Orleans. I love Cajun food. I love southern cuisine. I love all that shite.

But the answer is New York. It just is. Too many options and too much cultural variance to pick anything else.

I feel confident in saying I am well versed in this matter. Its pretty simple:

NYC is number one by far. Not even up for discussion.

SF area (this includes napa and sonoma) is number two.

Chicago and Nola are 3/4. I have only had 16 meals in chicago unlike the rest I mention herein...so its tough on reputation vs. a city I know so well (Nola), thus I leave it 3/4.

The next tier involves Houston, LA, DC, vegas, and Charleston. I would put it Houston, DC, Las Vegas, Charleston then LA.

[Have not been to Portland, San Diego, Denver or Seattle.
...I have eaten extensively in all others mentioned above
]

Solid cities worth a mention: Nashville, Boston, Atlanta, and Austin.

It's NOLA, NYC, and then CHI in that order.

Houston is a better food city than New Orleans but not by a huge margin

Boston is a shithole compared to the 5 in the OP :(

I would hope HOU had more variety and better restaurants overall than Nola with 7X the population to serve

The fact Nola is even in this argument in this thread is a huge testament to the city, food culture, and residents that know and support cuisine better than anywhere in the US.

Houston doesn't get enough credit at times but it's not better than NOLA. Well at least not until those 25 Dat Dogs open.

I completely agree

I mean Boston has at least twice the population of NOLA and doesn't even come close to it in the realm of food

Kind of depends on what you're looking for. Asian food (all regions of China, Thai, Burmese, Korean, Vietnamese, Laotian), it's San Francisco and north San Mateo County hands down. Seattle has a very underrated restaurant scene. N.Y. has the most varied-no other place comes close.

But, in my opinion, there's something about New Orleans (South Louisiana) that puts it at the top of the list. For me, it could be that absence makes the heart grow fonder thing since I only get to experience New Orleans once, maybe twice a year. You just can't get the food (done right) anywhere else.

You're out of your mind.

NOLA doesn't have a single five diamond restaurant
