Lil Fifty (half a buck) is in Kindergarten now. He's always eaten school lunch when he was in Pre-K, but now he wants to be like the cool kids and bring his own lunch.

I NEVER (not even once) in my life brought my own lunch to school, and neither did my Wife. We have no idea what to pack other than a sandwich.

Get a high quality Thermos, and you can send all sorts of stuff. Pasta, gumbo, jambalaya, and soups all stay plenty warm for my kids. The key is to put boiling water in there to heat it up then dump and it'll stay warm for hours and hours.

My kids probably eat sandwiches 2 or 3 times a week, and the other days are some sort of hot food like the above.

We've got a kindergartener and my wife insists on us packing his lunch every day. Poor kid eats a lot of PB&J or lunchmeat sandwiches, but he's a bit of an odd duck for a kiddo and likes peppers so we usually slice up a red/green pepper, some applesauce, string cheese, jell-o, whatever. Just try to mix it up a bit or it'll get pretty old pretty fast for him/her. If they'll eat sliced veggies or fruit of any kind that's pretty easy, and always keep a big jar of applesauce on hand when you don't know what else to put in there.

My kindergartener lives school lunch, but doesn't like their hamburgers (go figure) so every once in a while I pack hers.

Peanut butter sandwich, baked Cheetos, banana, fruit cup, cosmic brownie and a napkin with a note from momma.

Usually leftover meat, sliced avocado with lime juice (freshness), cut fruit, and a pumpkin muffin (we make these every week for the kids.

Sometimes little kabobs of cheese and olives, too.

Once a week they get a giant cobb salad.

Once a week they get a sandwich of their choice.

All packed in a lunch bot.

I was going to mention including a cute sweet note or a "joke a day" with the lunch.

I'm surprised schools even allow toothpicks, the way things are these days.

Thermoses work great if your child can handle those...getting them open and handling the hot/warm food. Those warm packs that can be microwaved to keep the food warm also work pretty well. Can keep a burger or sandwich wrapped in foil warm until lunch.

What you pack kind of depends on what your child likes to eat. My sister would make extra food the night before and reheat it to pack up in the mornings. Works especially well with pasta dishes.

Sandwiches, Cold cut rollups (on a tortilla), chicken nuggets, corn dogs, Spaghetti-O's in a thermos, Mac & Cheese with a little ham/turkey thrown in. Occasionally, I'll send a taco if we have some leftover.

I don't do the packaged lunchables, but I will buy some decent ham sliced thick (usually the Hormel Cure 81 Hams) and slice into squares- send a few ritz crackers and some sliced cheese, and you have a home made lunchable that's probably cheaper and definitely better quality ingredients.

All of the above come with some type of fruit or a fruit cup/apple sauce. I don't put anything sweet in my kids lunch box because they're always getting donuts, candy, and other junk food either in class or at after care.

I brought a lunch almost every day growing up, and it was a cold cut sandwich (tuna fish on Fridays in lent), fruit, a few chips, dessert and a drink.

You can send them Hi-C or Capri Sun- I found a couple of decent washable water bottles and fill them up with either water or lemonade I made at home.
