What's crazy is that you and Rouge both went to Portland and hit up some great breweries, yet there was only one brewery that you had in common (Base Camp), and it probably had the worst beer of any brewery on either of your lists. Although, admittedly, Base Camp is a pretty cool place to hang out.

I'm going to Bend this weekend.

Ale Apothecary has a tasting room, now.

10 Barrel and Deschutes both have brewpubs in Bend, too.

Others recommended:

Boneyard
Crux Fermentation Project
Goodlife
Bend Brewing (get Ching Ching)
Silver Moon (made major strides since changing their brewer)

Base Camp's Smore Stout was crazy good, and while everything else was a lot better than some breweries I've had, nothing else stood out.

Awesome beer made by dicks who use a cork, cap, and wax.

hey jax i just wanted to say thanks for your recommendations for portland and everyone else for seattle. Trip was fantastic. Did Hair of the Dog, Fat Heads, Deschutes, Base Camp, Cascade, Lucky Lab, Ethereal, and a few others. My favorite was probably cascade, but if you aren't into sours I wouldn't advise it. Base Camp was a nice mix of atmosphere and quality beer. Hotd was really really good as well. Fat Heads was fine. didn't spend a lot of time at 10 barrel because it was really crowded and we were tired from roaming around downtown all day. Deschutes was fine as well. Ethereal had a couple nice locations in cap hill and by safeco. All in all it was a fantastic trip.

I think they use rubber cement, too. Crux fermentation project is one of the coolest spots in Oregon to drink beer in the summer.

I felt like a bond villain opening the beer. Pull out a rolled up cloth, unrolling it to reveal myriad treacherous tools used to cause immense pain or open beers.

Good to hear. All of the breweries that you did were basically within a mile or so, of each other (within 10-12 blocks of the river on either side), so you were very efficient, and made good use of your time.

I like to point out the difference between the west side and east side breweries. The West Side places are generally more commercial and more upscale - Deschutes and 10 barrel are examples. The east side places tend to be more comfortable and casual and you can tell that those places were originally a warehouse or auto body shop - Hair of the Dog and Cascade are good examples. East side places are usually started by a couple of guys who scraped together the money to start a small brewery.
