Waka House on Highland/Lee

Just went there for lunch and I can say that I wasnt really impressed that much. The setup though looks really good for being such a small place, we were also the only people there so I might have a different opinion if it were packed.
The menu is very customer friendly if you arent a frequent diner of sushi. The menu had pics of many of the dishes that they serve.
We ordered
Miso Soup-same as every other place except they dont give you the plastic spoon(which I think is very important)
Seafood Salad-Wasnt exactly what I was expecting. Had a few pieces of fish and than the rest was fruit. It originally came with spicy mustard (which sounded really bad once I say there was fruit in it), but I switched it out with ponzu sauce. Was also $10 which I think was way too much for the dish.
Snowcrab Salad-Was also very disappointed with this. It was definitely not snowcrab, but the crabsticks just on top of a bed of cucumbers. The crab also seemed kinda warm.
Dynamite Roll-typical dynamite roll which I liked.
Tuna nigiri- Quality was good and so was the portion.
I give the visit a C+, girlfriend a B-.

I would like to try it. Heard they have some very good sushi rolls there, not sure about the other cuisine.

Not really...a lot of sushi places run about this price for a seafood salad. It might not be worth it sometimes though...just depends on the place.

Not a fan of snowcrab either. The nasty sushi at cheap Chinese buffets is that so I got turned off to it.

Went to the one on Sherwood when it first opened. Pretty good, but nothing spectacular.

I'd love to know what you call fantastic then because we'd probably have to agree to disagree. Their rolls are my favorite in the city...fresh tuna is great.

I haven't been to the new location, but the location on Sherwood has been consistently good on every visit. Only problem is, I usually spend about $70 every time I go there, and I just can't afford it.

The roll was good, and so was the tuna.
The salads were OK at best.

I know this is an old thread but I've been a few times now and now I feel like I can talk about it. There are a few things I REALLY enjoyed, the rest was just ok.
The spicy tuna roll is excellent - mainly because of the quality of fish like everyone else has said, but its just the right amount of spicy.
The baby octopus salad is probably my favorite dish I've ever had at a sushi restaurant. It's completely cooked in some kind of soy sauce/sesame oil concoction and then cooled down and served. If you are a texture person however, this may not be for you because it is weird in that sense. That being said, I did get my sister (who is the pickiest eater in the world) to try it and she LOVED it.
Lastly the Valentine's Day roll is like dessert...it combines fruit and shrimp with a nice sweet sauce on top, which is a little weird but at the end of the meal, it is truly delicious.
Other than that, my suggestion is to do the variety plate when you go. You can get half of any 3 sushi rolls on the menu for half of the price of each roll and it allows you to try everything you want without spending tons of money.
Overall, I'd give it a 7/10. I like the fact that a lot of their rolls are inventive but in some of the rolls, they went too far.

Has anyone tried Waka's fish straight up, instead of masked inside of a roll?
