Considering both US and British Virgin Islands. We are looking for the most wonderful beaches and the best restaurants the Caribbean has to offer.

Anyone have suggestions?

If you are looking for just 1 island, then St. John is your place. The most beautiful beaches and a number of high quality restaurants.

St. Thomas has some good restaurants but it is not in St. John's league as far as beaches. It is also more commercialized and has more crime.

From a BVI perspective, Tortola and to a lesser extent, Virgin Gorda are the most commercialized. All of the others have very few inhabitants and the only restaurants would be the ones at a resort.

I would recommend St. John by far if you were only going to do 1 island.

Springlake Tiger got it right. St. John is the answer. Rent a house on South side, white sand beaches are on the North side. Fly to St. Thomas, take the ferry to St. John. Pick up your rent car and house keys. Enjoy.

This sounds like something I would be very interested in. Do you have any specific recommendations on where to stay/eat/play on a vacation there?

St. John is beautiful! 3/4 of the island is a national park. Not very commercialized.

Two major resorts Caneel bay and Westin. Caneel bay is extremely laid back, cottages no tv electronics, etc...think celebs and adults no children.

Westin nice, accommodating but has a family vibe...but still Americanized.

Take day trips to Virgin gorda, necker island, Tortola, soggy dollar bar.

Fly into st Thomas take ferry over is a breeze. Can shop at st Thomas if you care.

Have been to Martinique, Caymus, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Nevis and St. John is my favorite for sheer beauty, snorkeling and nice people.

Good luck!

Any interest in St. Barts? It is the place I want to go most in that area of the world, but you don't see too many people talking about it round these parts.

St Barths is awesome. It's also quite expensive. Restaurants are very good.

To the OP. St John would be a fantastic choice. VRBO a condo at Grande Bay and you'll be right in the middle of Cruz Bay steps from Beach Bar and the rest of the town and restaurants.

Rent a dinghy one day from my friends Joe and Kim at Noah's Little Arks and tool around the island. Tell them King Bill sent you.

Then day trip to Jost, Virgin Gorda and try to get to the Willie T on Norman Island for an afternoon of extremely rowdy fun. You can't hit all three in a day trip. Just some suggestions.

St. Barths is phenomenal. In former life, spent a good clip of time in the BVIs, which I personally think are better than USVIs. However, the real joy of the BVIs are to be found aboard a boat. A week spent cruising from island to island will reveal all the beauty and glory of the Caribbean.

Now there are a few more resorts than in times past. Norman Island and Peter have nice resorts now. As far as food, its not great. But there was an awesome French spot/bar in Road Town that reminds me of the N7 place everyone was dissecting earlier today. But really you arent down there for food.

Now food in the Caribbean, St. Barths wins by a nautical mile.

Providenciales is also excellent for food. Grace Bay isn't a bad little beach either.

If you end up on St. Thomas, go to the Island View Guesthouse. Great little bed and breakfast built into the mountain with a restaurant on top. It's all outside, and has amazing views of Charlotte Amalie. The menu is limited, but the food is excellent and the ambiance (and the honor bar) make it a pretty unforgettable experience. Make a reservation, because there are only a few tables.

St. John question:

where would you stay 2 couples, relaxing at beach and day trips to Jost ; Willies ; etc... easy beach access.

There is no easy beach access. Every beach on St John (except maybe Caneel Bay) has to be driven to as most of them are in national parks. You can catch the bus in town to ride to most of the beaches. Trunk Bay is the most popular and quite possibly the prettiest.

I'd get a condo in Cruz Bay at Grande Bay. You're right in the middle of town with most of the restaurants and night life a short walk away. It's also the jump off point for the ferry. With two couples I'd charter a boat for the day for the day trip. It will cost about $750 for the day and you can set your itinerary without being herded.

Peter Bay Gatehouse. There are 2 1BR apartments. Views are of Cinnamon Bay and the BVIs. A little rustic but the location is exclusive. Any day trips will pick you up by the national park dock, but it is easy to find parking in the am. I really recommend Island Roots for day trips for small groups. Jason is a cool dude. He was actually on one of the Survivor shows, I think Palau. We did the Indians, the Norman Caves, then had lunch at the Willy T, then finished up the trip at the Soggy Dollar bar.

I have been to Caneel Bay once and stayed in a villa twice. Both experiences were great and had their perks.

This summer, I am actually going to the Bitter End Yacht Club in Virgin Gorda. If you stay for a week, it is all inclusive except for alcohol. Included is food, but more importantly all water sports, daily BVI excursions, and use of their fleet of 150 boats. I plan on doing an excursion every single day. Can't wait. I think in total the BVIs are better than the USVIs, but if I had to pick one island only, I would pick St. John without question.

I agree with this statement.

I did spend a week in St. Croix in November and enjoyed it immensely. The local people we met were great and there were some very good restaurants.
