Saw a facebook post about this and it got me intrigued.
quote:

"Rich and decadent "Batch 00" is the first barrel aged beer in the history of Tin Roof Brewing Coo. This strong tart ale has an unrepeatable tart cherry and dark chocolate flavor that compliments the array of dark fruit, subtle floral and smokey aromas. All of this is the result of blending, mixed fermentation, and extended aging in bourbon barrels"

Then i saw a write up on it at the advocate

quote:

Tin Roof Cellarman Robbie Wendeborn said the finished product was a blend of Smiling Ivan Russian imperial stout, Parade Ground coffee porter and a milk stout all aged in different barrels, then mixed with fresh Shack Shaker stout. He said the barrels were all of different ages with varying exposure to different yeasts and microbes. Only 60 cases of 22-ounce bottles and a limited amount of kegs will be available. Friday's event starts at 4 p.m. and features music from The Rakers as well as barbecue.

So those in the know, when they say mixed fermentation, was this introduced on purpose or a byproduct from the barrel aging process? And is this a sign of more mixed ferm beers in the future? Possibly using wine barrels/foeders?

My impression is that they unintentionally infected it, now they are trying to market it as being intentional. I could be wrong, however. That's just my gut feeling.

I think that's a pretty shady thing to do, so if I'm right I'll have lost more respect for Tin Roof. If not, then it's a wash.

Didn't they say on The Sour Hour that the new crew inherited pre-filled barrels from the old crew? And some of them were unintentionally sour and good and some of them were dumpers? I think I'm remembering that correctly.

Well, not all unintentional souring is bad, if that's the case. Hell, that's how sour beer began in the first place. Whether it's open top wild fermenting vs. critters getting through staves, as long as it sours nicely, then i don't see the problem.

You remember correctly. Way more dumpers than good.

I just don't have much hope they can put out a good barrel aged beer since they have a hard time with putting out good consistent everyday beers.

Of course not all unintentional souring is bad. But most is. Definitely try it first and see if it's good, but don't be shocked when it's not. That should be dumped. What part of a sour RIS/Coffee porter/milk stout sounds good? That sounds like a dumper.

But we will see I guess.

Could be. Tart of Darkness is an oatmeal stout base.

Could be, sure. Sour Bourbon County Coffee could have been good too.

Sounds like someone who hasn't had a Tin Roof beer since the Tom and Alex days of yesteryear.

I have not as of yet. I will give them another shot for sure and am looking forward to trying the new recipes. However, if I'm reading this correctly, these brews were leftovers from the old brewers? If that is correct, then I won't hold out much hope on this one.

Nowhere did I say great.

Good consistent every day beers, yes. They are on their way to getting there given the recent recipe changes.

No one is going to confuse them with Parish. But that's OK. At least now I have a few of their offerings that I'm willing to drink on a regular basis.

the last few times i have been there hasnt been any turnrow? any reason why? The only thing else i drink there is the DIPA and IMO it isnt hoppy enough. it is just basic.

The Choconut porter they had was ok. I tasted the chocolate but not the coconut. But it felt more like a stout than a porter to me.

Still haven't settled on a final recipe for it.

Juke Joint 2.0 is really good.

It was a test batch. They would agree with you too.

Juke Joint 2.0 drinks hoppier than the DIPA.
