My girlfriend's aunt thaws meat - steaks, pork loin, ribs, etc. - on the counter all night (for 5-7 hours at a time) to the point where the food is lukewarm before she cooks it.

I've mentioned to her several times how unsafe this is and she simply responds with that's how she always done it. The worst part is that she is feeding it to my kid.

Am I dick for not eating it? What else can I do besides throwing the stuff away before she cooks it?

No need to leave it out all night, put it in the fridge when you go to bed, pull it back out in the morning if needed. But sometimes we forget. It's fine, we cook it.

Luke warm? How hot is it in her house?

Mind your own business and let her cook the way she wants. If you don’t want your
Kid eating it, say so.

No you’re not a dick, but you come off as a huge pussy. Especially if you throw out her groceries. That’s such a Bitch move I’m wondering if you are trolling.

Still be frozen in my fridge. Even on 41, especially in the back. I won't go to lukewarm, but will thaw things on the counter.

A frozen pork loin is “lukewarm” in 5-7 hours?

Yeah, For big things I usually thaw for 2 days in the fridge or I take it out night before and let it spend an hour or so on the counter (still very cold to the touch) and put it in the fridge before bed.

I have a pork tenderloin on my counter now but I will put it in the fridge before bed hopefully. If I forget and it is still cold game on.

I’ve left all sorts of meat out overnight. Sometimes 10-12 hours before I start cooking it. I’m 40 years old and still kicking.

I thaw frozen foods by moving them into the refrigerator but thawing them in the sink under cold running water is another way to go. I wouldn’t thaw anything with any mass by leaving it out on the counter but it wouldn’t freak me out if someone else did that.

Not a huge fan of leaving anything smaller than a big slab of meat out overnight. Almost always go fridge overnight and then counter in the morning. So by dinner it should be fine (if it wasn’t already from the fridge).

There are only two acceptable ways to thaw food in the restaurant world

In the cooler or completely submerged in cool water with a drip running from the faucet.

I do the cold water thing most often as well, but that's because I'm doing last minute thawing in those situations.

If I plan ahead, it is almost always the fridge. I just leave it on the counter next to the fridge for about an hour before it goes in if it's only the night before I need it, because it's very common for things to still be frozen solid if I don't.
