I remember 8thyearsenior in this FBD thread several months back talking about a guy he knew in Denver with a mind-blowing beer cellar who had hosted an elite "ghost whale" tasting with a small number of select guests.

Well, apparently someone just published a professional write-up documenting it.

LINK

quote:

They called it the Ghost Whale tasting. A gathering of the world’s foremost beer hunters. It was to be the tasting to end all tastings, the one that all others are judged against. Big words, big statements, but these guys had what it took to put it together: deep pockets, strong connections and an almost maniacal obsession with hunting rare beers.

Exceptionally rare beers have been nicknamed “Whales” (the whole, “biggest creature in the sea” thing), and the most exclusive of these whales are referred to as “White Whales.” Beers such as Rodenbach’s cherry-infused Alexander Rodenbach (last made in 2000) or Drie Fonteinen’s Millennium Geuze (one-off, limited Belgian distribution). But narrow this group down even further to the most elite of the white whales and you’ve got “Ghost Whales” (the moniker for the white beluga). For a beer to be deemed a ghost whale, it must not only come from a deeply respected producer, but also have a scarcity that limits remaining bottles to numbers you learned to count to in kindergarten. These extraordinary near-extinct beers, such as the original ’03 batch of Cantillon’s cloudberry masterpiece, Soleil de Minuit, or Lost Abbey’s for-friends-only Veritas 005, can fetch over $4,000 apiece among private collectors.

The idea for this super-tasting started when a Denver beer collector, Bill Young, got his hands on a bottle of Drie Fonteinen’s Driesjes Eerste Plasje. ...

Pretty interesting article. I know some of y'all decry the glorification of rares and what-not. But as a "lambic head" myself, I found it to be a very interesting read and was quite intrigued by stuff like this.

quote:

After that was Cantillon’s ’05 Bourgogne. Contrary to popular belief, there were no grapes used in this beer. It’s simply a lambic aged for two years in a Nuits-St-Georges Burgundy wine barrel (hence, the Bourgogne name). The legend goes that Van Roy was tasting barrels to blend into his Classic Gueuze. When he sampled the lambic from this particular barrel, he was so impressed by its balance and complexity that he pulled a few bottles directly off it to save for special occasions. A mere 24 bottles were filled and rest was blended into gueuze. Attendee Ryan Neas scored the bottle from a Danish beer collector who had a long-time connection with Cantillon.

So did you out 8th as Bill Young?

Must be a pretty cool feeling to score such rare bottles, even better to pull people in for tastings of such WW.

Thanks for posting, I love this kind of stuff. I find the BA forum pretty much worthless but once in a rare while a thread about ghost whales will popup and people who are actually knowledgeable will post in it, always very interesting stuff.

I've got 8 bottles of my 1st year, unblended lambic left Two bottles have wound up in the hands of some FBD posters of questionable character

Nice. I tried some young lambic earlier this year. Green, earthy, a little bitter, very drinkable and interesting. Definitely not as complex as mature lambic.

Are you planning on blending 1, 2, and 3?

Easily my favorite quote:

quote:

Given the class of the beer, one might expect a good deal of pomp and circumstance. The sort of intense anticipation and solemnity a comparable wine tasting might experience. Instead, it was beer-geek casual. Invitees rolled in groggy from traveling, wearing hoodies and worn-out sneakers. Apparently even at the highest level, beer tastings are still not the domain of the sports jacket and Italian leather loafer crowd.

I enjoyed that read. I'd have loved to have been there just to smell what was being poured.

Yes, I've got two barrels now. Next spring they will be 1 and 2 years old. The 1 year old was the one that I spontaneously fermented. The 2 year old won't be exactly two years old b/c I pulled off a few gallons and replaced that with fresh wort. I bottled most with champagne yeast but bottled about 10 bottles straight. I haven't tried the straight but I've been very pleased with the champagne yeast ones.

I'll toss you a bottle in the next box that I send to B. Then if I bottle any in the spring, I'll try to get a bottle to you then as well

I won't drink it as long as you send me the annual release! I'm a completionist that way.

I have a bottle of that. And a bottle of your Grand Cru. Didn't you tell me not to drink either for a year?

Based on some early reviews, I think it is safe to drink the one bottled with champagne yeast whenever you want. But yes, I would wait at least a year on the Gran Cru.

Good article. The author appeared to be an observer. I'd have gone crazy being around those beers and not getting to try them.

A whale tasting with no IPAs or KBS? What a joke.
